Collision Prevention Assist - what is it in Mercedes-Benz vehicles?

To ensure the safety of the driver and his passengers, various auxiliary systems are used: stabilization (ESP), anti-slip control (TCS, ASR), parking sensors, a tracking system for road markings, and so on. In Mercedes cars, another very useful system is installed - Collision Prevention Assist to prevent collisions. It has analogues in other brands of cars, for example CMBS (Honda) - Collision Mitigation Brake System - collision mitigation braking system.

In this article on our website Vodi.su we will try to understand the device and the principle of operation of such systems.

As practice shows, many accidents occur due to the fact that drivers do not keep a safe distance. According to the traffic rules, a safe distance is the distance to passing vehicles in front, at which the driver will only need to press the brakes to avoid a collision without making any other maneuvers - changing lanes, driving into an oncoming lane or onto the sidewalk. That is, the driver must approximately know what the stopping distance is at a particular speed and adhere to the same or slightly greater distance.

This system is based on the same technology as parking sensors - the space in front of the car is constantly scanned using ultrasound, and if a sharp contraction is detected with an object in front, the driver will be given the following signals:

  • first, an optical signal lights up on the instrument panel;
  • if there is no reaction, an intermittent sound signal is heard;
  • the steering wheel starts to vibrate.

If the distance continues to decrease catastrophically quickly, then the adaptive braking system will be activated. It is worth noting that the CPA is able to fix the distance to both moving and stationary objects. So, if the speed of movement is from seven to 70 km / h, then the distance to any objects is measured. If the speed is in the range of 70-250 km / h, then the CPA scans the space in front of the car and measures the distance to any moving targets.

Thus, summing up all that has been said, we come to the following conclusions:

  • the principle of operation of the collision avoidance system is based on radar technology;
  • CPA can both warn the driver of the danger, and independently activate the brake system;
  • operates in the speed range of 7-250 km/h.

For the most effective control over the traffic situation, the CPA actively interacts with the Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control system at speeds up to 105 km / h. That is, when driving at such a speed on the motorway, the driver may feel more or less calm, although vigilance is necessary in any situation.

CMBS is based on the same technology - the radar scans the area in front of a moving vehicle and, if it detects a sharp reduction in the distance to the vehicles in front, warns the warrior about this. In addition, if the reaction does not follow, then Brake Assist is activated - an adaptive braking system, while the seat belt tensioners are activated.

It should also be said that CMBS can be equipped with surveillance cameras in order to avoid collision with pedestrians when driving at speeds up to 80 km/h. In principle, such a system can be installed on any car equipped with ABS.

The principle of operation of such security systems is quite simple:

  • cameras or echo sounders in this case are distance sensors;
  • information from them is constantly fed to the control unit;
  • in the event of an emergency, acoustic or visual signals are activated;
  • if there is no reaction, the solenoid valves and the reverse-acting pump increase the pressure in the brake hoses and the vehicle begins to brake.

It must be said that such assistants, although they provide significant assistance while driving, still cannot completely replace the driver. Therefore, for the sake of your own safety, in no case should you relax, even if you have the most modern and technically advanced car.
