What to do if you hit a dog - an accident with a dog

According to the rules of the road, hitting a dog is also an accident. Therefore, it is not possible to pick up and leave the scene of an accident, since under article 12.27 part 2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, hiding from the scene of an accident is punishable by deprivation of rights for 12-18 months or imprisonment for 15 days.

If such a problem befell you and you knocked down a dog, cat or other animal, you should first find out if he has an owner. If it is a stray dog, you need to stop and remove it from the road so as not to interfere with the movement of other participants. If there is damage to the vehicle, you can claim damages under CASCO, if there is a “action of wild animals” clause in it, for this you need to call an insurance agent or capture the scene with a camera.

If the dog is still alive, then according to the rules, it must be taken to the veterinary clinic and paid for treatment.

This rule is very rarely followed, as few people want to stain the interior or trunk with blood, and a wounded animal can become very aggressive. She is simply dragged to the curb.

If the dog has an owner, then you should not immediately pay money for treatment. According to the rules of walking animals, the dog must be with a collar and on a leash, if this is not observed, then it is not your fault for hitting. According to the SDA, it is the owner of the dog who must prove the fault of the driver. In any case, you need to call the traffic police inspector and describe the situation. They will draw up a protocol. All expenses for the treatment of the dog will be paid from OSAGO, because the dog is private property according to the law.

Usually, such a problem is solved amicably right on the spot - the dog is taken to the veterinary clinic and the treatment is paid for. If the owner does not agree with you, he has the right to sue and it is he who will have to prove that the dog was walking according to all the rules, and it is the driver who is to blame.

In any case, you need to remember that dogs and other animals often jump out onto the roadway, however, it is not always possible to go around them. Therefore, it is not worth risking your life and the lives of passengers, since they are incommensurably more valuable than the life of a dog.

But nevertheless, any accident should be tried to prevent, even if it concerns a dog.
