The brake pedal has failed - what to do? How to solve a problem?

If the brake pedal fails, then this is the first sign that the car's brake system needs serious diagnostics and repair. If the brakes fail on the move as a result, then stopping such a car at speed will be very problematic, only colliding with something - another car, a pole or a wall.

Causes of brake pedal failure can be as follows:

  • the main brake cylinder leaks brake fluid and does not hold pressure, cuffs and rubber gaskets are worn out;
  • you have selected the wrong type of brake fluid;
  • problems with pads and brake discs;
  • the vacuum pump is defective;
  • the pedal rods are covered with rust.

An experienced auto mechanic will be able to easily determine the cause of the problem.

Alarm signals are also hissing of the brake pedal while pressing it, tapping, vibration.

How to solve this problem?

Firstly, low-quality brake fluid or one that is not suitable for you in composition can corrode the brake hoses and all rubber elements, they can begin to delaminate and swell, losing their tightness. There is only one way out - a complete diagnosis with the replacement of the fluid and all damaged elements.

Secondly, if the cause lies in rusted rods, then they need to be changed. This can be understood if, after pressing the pedal, it remains in this position and has to be returned using improvised means.

Thirdly, if the reason lies in the violation of the gap between the pedal and the GTZ, this can be determined by simply pressing it - at first the pedal goes easily, and then you have to apply force. If the pedal freezes before reaching the extreme position, then the gap is not adjusted and the pressure in the brake system does not allow the pedal to fully lower and return to its original position. In this case, you need to adjust and pump the brakes.

A very common problem is air congestion, which occurs as a result of wear on hoses and rubber cuffs. They also appear due to breakdowns of the vacuum pump.

Problems can arise if there is not enough pressure in the wheel brake cylinders to push the brake pads apart and press them against the disc. In this case, you need to check if the pads are worn out.

You can fix problems on your own, if you have sufficient knowledge and skills, or by sending the car for diagnostics to the service station. If such a misfortune befell you while driving, then you need to try to slow down the engine, stop and call a tow truck, since it is forbidden to drive with a faulty brake system.
