What does the catalytic converter warning light mean?

The catalytic converter warning light means that the catalytic converter in your engine may not be working properly, possibly due to overheating.

Catalytic converters are one of the most important additions to a modern car. Without them, air quality in high-traffic areas would be significantly worse. Using chemical reactions, the rare metals inside the converter break down the harmful gases coming out of the exhaust into their main components, which are not harmful.

The catalytic converter works in conjunction with oxygen sensors built into the exhaust system to monitor fumes leaving the engine and help the vehicle stay as efficient as possible. A bad catalytic converter will falsify the oxygen sensor readings and your engine will not run as efficiently.

What does the catalytic converter warning light mean?

This indicator is intended to alert the driver that the catalytic converter is either overheating or not working properly. The inside of the catalytic converter consists of a honeycomb structure that increases the air contact area. Over time, the metal can begin to deteriorate and clog holes, leading to overheating problems caused by restricted airflow. Oxygen sensors can also malfunction, causing the computer to think that the converter is not working properly.

Always check the oxygen sensors before replacing the catalytic converter. On newer vehicles, most manufacturers have gotten rid of the separate converter warning light and have attributed any problems with the converter to the check engine light. Similar to the operation of the check engine light, when this light comes on you may or may not notice a difference while driving. In any case, you should never ignore this warning signal. The car's computer will store a code that will help you determine the cause of the problem. A certified technician will be able to connect the scanner to the vehicle and read the code.

Is it safe to drive with the catalytic converter light on?

If you don't feel any significant difference while driving, then you should be fine for now. You still need to check the light, as small problems almost always turn into bigger problems if they are neglected. In the event of significant damage occurring or occurring, some vehicles may even prevent you from starting the engine. Like many other components in your vehicle, the catalytic converter can usually be saved by noticing the warning signs and fixing them quickly.

If the catalytic converter warning light is on, contact one of our certified technicians to help you diagnose any problems.
