What is a choke? Symptoms of a breakdown and the cost of repairing a damaged throttle body

As the name suggests, throttle has a lot to do with throttle control. But what? Read our text and learn more about this mechanism. How does the throttle valve work? What alarming symptoms portend its damage? How much will it cost to repair? We will answer all of these questions, so if you want to know more, start reading!

Throttle - what is it?

The damper is a kind of throttle valve that regulates the flow of air due to a disk rotating around its own axis. The movement of the blade inside leads to the fact that the medium inside is fed further in the right amount. In automotive engines, the throttle body is often a separate component. It has already been used in steam locomotives, so it is by no means a modern invention. Nowadays, it can also be found, for example, in aircraft engines. It is one of the main parts of cars.

Throttle - where is it and what is its function?

The throttle body of a car is responsible for regulating the amount of air supplied to the cylinders. His work, therefore, primarily affects the acceleration of the car. It can usually be found in the intake duct behind the air filter. It is important to note that it is usually attached to the pedal with a metal cable and spring. When you click on the latter, it opens wider. As a result, the speed increases, which means that the engine power increases. Therefore, the throttle is very important for the correct acceleration of the car.

Broken Throttle - What Can Go Wrong?

Most often, problems with this part of the engine arise due to the ingress of dirt into it. Other common sources of failure are problems with the spin motor or with the sensor. However, it is dirt that causes the engine to receive the wrong amount of fuel. This can lead to serious problems with vehicle acceleration. So you need to control the state of this element. Dirt is inevitable, of course, but when too much accumulates, you will feel the effects while driving.

Throttle valve damage - symptoms that occur most often

A throttle malfunction can manifest itself with a whole range of characteristic symptoms that should not be underestimated. This is especially:

  • uneven engine operation;
  • jerks while driving;
  • engine stalls even at idle.

If the engine runs unevenly, this is a sign that not enough air is getting into it. If you feel jerks while driving, it is worth stopping and checking if the whole car is working properly. Does your car stall even at idle? This can also be a typical symptom of a bad throttle body. You certainly don't want to ruin your car. So what to do? If these symptoms appear, contact a mechanic immediately or do the repairs yourself.

Throttle failure - symptoms unclear?

The seeds of throttle problems don't necessarily show up as overt symptoms. If something bad starts to happen to it, your car's fuel consumption may increase initially. For this reason, it is always worth keeping an eye on the average fuel consumption on specific routes. You can even save it to a notepad to compare the data and quickly find the car's problem. The throttle body can also be in poor condition if you sometimes have trouble starting the car. However, this symptom may indicate other problems, so be careful.

Throttle - how much does a replacement cost?

If you just want to have the throttle shaft cleaned by a mechanic, then you will pay 120-20 euros (the cost depends on the chosen workshop). However, it is more difficult to determine the replacement price because each car model is different, so the costs also differ. However, it is worth noting that this part usually does not need to be replaced. However, if this is unavoidable, the amount will be considerable. Sometimes you have to spend more than a thousand zlotys on a new part, as well as pay labor costs.

A car throttle is an element of the engine without which it is difficult to accelerate efficiently. If you notice any of the symptoms we have listed, do not underestimate the problem. It is clearly seen that cleaning the throttle is much cheaper than replacing it. Therefore, it is not worth bringing to an extreme situation, because it will hit not only the car, but also the wallet.
