What is a gel car battery and what are the top three options

Gel batteries have a longer life than traditional batteries; this is because the gel-like solution can hold a charge longer. This type of battery is also durable and can withstand extreme temperature ranges.

It is already well known that the battery in cars is one of the most important elements and therefore we should always make sure that it is in good condition or even upgrade it to a better quality or gel battery.

What is a gel battery?

A gel car battery is a modification of a lead-acid battery with an electrolyte gelling agent that prevents excessive movement inside the battery.

Therefore, the gelled electrolyte increases the performance of the battery. Consequently, battery life is also greatly increased. Some batteries on the market use one-way valves to prevent gases from escaping and allowing them to be reused.

Compared to conventional batteries, gel batteries are much lighter. This technology uses only a small amount of solidified electrolyte to keep the acid immobile.

Advantages of a gel battery:

– Low costs

Less chance of spilling acid.

- Lighter than conventional batteries

– Can be used in cold climates.

Disadvantages of gel batteries:

– Gel batteries are more expensive than other types of batteries.

– Lower charging speed and voltage than conventional batteries

Here we've rounded up some of the top three gel battery options.

1.- Optima Red Top

It is used to start a conventional engine where the alternator immediately monitors the state of charge and supplies power to the battery when needed. This describes most conventional vehicles.

2.- Optima yellow top

It is used when electrical loads are greater than normal or when the discharge cycle exceeds a typical start, such as in vehicles without an alternator. This also includes vehicles with significant electrical loads that may exceed the average generator output (eg, auxiliary audio systems, GPS, chargers, winches, snow blowers, inverters, modified vehicles).

3.- Blue top Optima Marina

It should be used whenever a dedicated starting battery is required; but should never be used for cyclic operations. The Optima BlueTop dual purpose battery (light gray body) can be used as both a starter battery and a deep cycle battery; it is a true deep cycle battery with extremely high starting power.
