What is voltage drop test?

The problem is that your engine turns slowly or not at all, but the battery and starter are working fine. Or your alternator is charging normally but not keeping the battery charged. Obviously, AvtoTachki will have to fix this electrical problem.

Often this type of car electrical problem occurs due to too much resistance in a high current circuit. If there is no current flowing, the battery will not be able to hold a charge and the starter will not be able to crank the engine. It doesn't take much resistance to create a problem. Sometimes it doesn't take long and the problem may not be visible to the naked eye. That's when the voltage drop test is done.

What is a voltage drop test?

This is a way to troubleshoot electrical problems that does not require disassembly and will show in a short time if you have a good connection. To do this, AvtoTachki creates a load in the circuit under test and uses a digital voltmeter to measure the voltage drop across the connection under load. As far as voltage is concerned, it will always follow the path of least resistance, so if there is too much resistance in a connection or circuit, some of it will pass through the digital voltmeter and give a voltage reading.

With a good connection, there should be no drop, or at least very little (usually under 0.4 volts, and ideally under 0.1 volts). If the drop is more than a few tenths, then the resistance is too high, the connection will have to be cleaned or repaired.

There may be other reasons why your car's engine won't start - it's not always a voltage drop. However, a voltage drop test can diagnose a car's electrical problems without the need for a lot of disassembly.
