How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Maryland

If you live in Maryland and own your vehicle, then you also have what is called a title. This title confirms that you are the registered owner of the vehicle. You will need this title if you plan to sell your car or register it in another state. While it is always important to store it in a safe and secure place, accidents can happen such as losing your title, damaging it, or even having it stolen. If this happens, you need to apply for a duplicate through the Maryland Motor Vehicle Authority (MVA).

The dual title will also show the collateral holder if they are involved. This will immediately invalidate the previous title, which is good to know if it has been stolen.

Applying for a duplicate title is relatively simple and can be done in one of three ways, which we describe here.

Personally

  • To apply in person, you must complete the Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Ownership (Form VR-018). This form must be signed by you and any other owner. Along with the form, you must provide a copy of your ID or driver's license, a damaged title if you have one, and a $20 fee.

By mail

  • You will need to follow the same steps as when applying in person and can be mailed to your local MVA office. The actual form also has an address that you can use. The processing time is quite fast, it usually ships the next day after processing.

Online

  • This is the fastest and most convenient option. Just follow the instructions online and have your license plate and vehicle number handy for you to enter. Again, a $20 fee will be required.
