What is MD tuning and why is it useless

MD tuning - engineering refinement of the throttle. A popular modernization scheme was proposed by the American engineer Ron Hutton, who claims that the correct MD tuning increases the power of an automobile engine and reduces fuel consumption by a quarter.

What is MD tuning and why is it useless

What is MD tuning

The essence of the process is to create grooves (grooves) in front of the damper in the direction of its movement. In other words, when you press the gas pedal, the damper should move and be located above the corresponding groove.

If translated into a normal, non-technical language, then with minimal pressure on the gas pedal, the damper opens at a small angle and is above the groove. Due to this groove, more air enters the engine and increases power.

What effect is achieved

What actually happens after the "pumping" of the car? MD-tuning does not affect the operation of the engine and mixture formation at idle. But when the dampers are opened at the appropriate angle, the air flow in the intake tract increases. The same thing happens if at the start you press the gas pedal harder than usual. The effect of "increase in power" appears only due to the greater opening of the damper.

Why there is no real increase in power and fuel economy

In fact, the throttle upgrade does not provide the desired increase in engine power and fuel economy. It all depends on how much the gas pedal is pressed. After upgrading, you need to press it a little less. At the same time, the modified throttle does not affect fuel loss at idle (about 50%). It can affect losses only when the throttle is fully opened, and they are an order of magnitude smaller.

Additional disadvantages of the procedure

As for the shortcomings of MD tuning, there are a lot of them. These include:

  • loss of throttle elasticity;
  • high cost of the service;
  • poor quality of work;
  • non-linear response to the gas pedal.

In addition, if you make too deep chamfers, due to which the sealing of the closed throttle valve is violated, the car starts to act up at idle.

Such refinement of the car can only be done when you want to get a sharp response on the bottoms and feel that the vehicle is driving itself, but all this is an illusion. If the work of the return on pressing the pedal suits, then you should not spend money and make this useless upgrade.
