What are specialized woodworking planers?
As the description suggests, specialized planers are designed for specific jobs such as planing a rebate, a groove, a round or round piece of wood, and irregular curves, such as in wooden musical instruments such as guitars and violins.
The specialized aircraft produced so far are mostly metal. Old planes, wood and metal, are also readily available online, in showrooms and second-hand stores.
Decreasing numbers | ||
Some specialized aircraft are no longer produced on any significant scale. For example, with the exception of a very small number of specialist manufacturers, when it comes to molding planers that carve decorative shapes into edges or rails of wood, the choice seems to be second-hand or "do it yourself" - as some very enthusiastic woodworkers do.
Although you can purchase forming irons for hand combination planers, as shown in the image (see photo). What is a combination aircraft?), the electrically driven milling machine has largely supplanted the forming planer due to its speed and the wide range of milling cutters or milling cutters available.
It's a general trend - the work of many specialized planers these days is mostly done with a router like the one you see here. But there are still workshops - amateur and professional - that have a wide selection of these planers, but it can still be faster to use compared to setting up a router and its accessories.
Specialized Aircraft vs. Routers
Dedicated aircraft DO have at least two distinct advantages over a router: 1. Do not raise clouds of dust into the workshop (a dust extractor is needed) 2. They are incredibly quiet compared to a router.
