What is a fuel injector?

Nozzle (also called

tip) is an integral part of the injector. Depending on the application, it may

be either "Pintal" or "multi-hole" design.

Early IDI (indirect

Injection) types of diesel and most gasoline engines have a pintal design, which

has an inverted conical tip at the end of the nozzle stem. It produces

conical shape of spray when spraying fuel. These nozzles are installed

either in the intake manifold (multiport) or in a "swirl chamber" in the head.

However, they are not installed by the nozzle directly into the combustion chamber.

camera.

The most common type

The injector used in the modern diesel engine is a multiple orifice design. This is the nozzle

installed directly in the combustion chamber, so they are under high pressure and

temperature environment. If the nozzle is installed concentrically in

the center of the cylinder, then the holes are all located in the same plane or

ring around the nozzle at an equal distance from each other. If the nozzle is installed at an angle,

then the holes can be in two different planes, at an angle, so that the resulting jet

the pattern is concentric in the piston. Multiple orifice nozzles may have different

the number and size of holes depending on the combustion chamber, engine size and required power.
