What is a turbo timer in a car

A turbo timer is an electronic gadget designed to increase the life of a car's turbine. Turbo timers are recommended to be installed on cars with turbocharged engines. By itself, this device is a sensor, slightly larger than a box of matches, it is installed under the dashboard of the car and connected to the wiring coming from the ignition switch.

There is no single point of view on the usefulness of this device. Manufacturers explain the need for its installation by the peculiarities of the operation of the car's turbine. The turbine continues to run for some time after the engine has stopped.

All drivers of such cars know that a turbocharged engine cannot be immediately turned off after driving at high speeds, since the bearings still continue to rotate by inertia, and the oil stops flowing and its residues begin to burn and bake on the bearings, blocking the entrances to the turbine oil channels.

As a result of such careless handling of the car engine by the driver, he is in for an expensive repair of the turbine.

The sharp shutdown of a turbocharged engine after intensive driving at high speeds is, of course, extreme. The turbine takes some time to cool down - a few minutes.

So, by installing a turbo timer, you can safely turn off the ignition, and the device is programmed to continue the engine until it cools down completely.

But on the other hand, if you quietly back into the garage or try to take a parking space, then the turbine does not work in such an extreme mode and it has enough time to cool down.

To install a turbo timer or not - no one will give you a specific answer to this question. It all depends on how you drive. Reckless drivers, of course, need a turbo timer if they don’t constantly have a few minutes to sit in the car while the turbine cools down at idle.

If you drive in a gentle mode, idle for half a day in traffic jams, then you can do without it.

This device has one more function - anti-theft. Its essence lies in the fact that during that short time, while the turbo timer ensures the engine is idling, no one will be able to get into the car, start it and drive away, since the timer will block the control, and you will hear the alarm screeching.

Installing a turbo timer will cost you relatively inexpensively - in the range of 60-150 USD, and repairing a turbine can cost several thousand. Therefore, the decision should be entirely up to the driver.
