The brake pedal position sensor is a contact sensor that detects the position of the service brake pedal (pedal depressed or not depressed). The function of the sensor can be performed by a separate sensor installed under the brake pedal, or a brake light switch (“frog”) installed in the low pressure circuit of the air brake system. Both devices can be installed on the car: the pedal position sensor and the brake light switch.
When the brake pedal is depressed, a sensor or switch sends a signal to the ECU that the pedal has started to move. As a result, the accelerator pedal is released and the engine speed is reduced to the minimum idle speed.
Pressing the brake pedal also disables some features such as cruise control and power take-off.
BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR FAILURE.
If the brake pedal position sensor fails, the ECU signals an error via a diagnostic lamp. If the brake light sensor or switch is faulty, the engine does not respond to the accelerator pedal and the engine speed is set to minimum idle.
FAULT DIAGNOSTICS OF THE SENSOR.
Diagnostics of a sensor malfunction depends on its model, therefore, for diagnostics, it is necessary to contact the direct vehicle manufacturers.
If the design of the sensor provides for adjustment, then it is necessary to adjust the pedal position sensor in accordance with the Vehicle's Owner's Manual.
