Speed sensor Kia Sid 2013

Such a malfunction of the car does not particularly affect road safety, but it must be eliminated. This will help to avoid unnecessary problems with traffic police officers for speeding. There are a few more situations where speedometer readings are needed. Therefore, it is desirable that drivers know how to resume their work.

How does a speedometer work

For quite some time, a car's speedometer has not been connected to the gearbox via a speedometer cable. After the cars began to be equipped with an on-board computer, the impulses to the speedometer come from the speed sensor, which is installed in the gearbox. The speedometer itself is a stepper motor, the operation of which is controlled by impulses coming from the gearbox.

If the system is powered by electrical impulses, then there must be a fusible link for these devices. There is no dedicated speedometer fuse on this vehicle; a common device is installed for all sensors. Its number is 22, it is rated for a current of 22 amperes. Pay attention to your serviceability in case of failure of all sensors, which happens very rarely.

Where else to look for a problem?

If only the speedometer fails, the problems may be with the speed sensor or the speedometer itself. To test these devices, you will need a car tester, multimeter, or test light. First of all, you need to check the power supply circuit of the speed sensor. To do this, disconnect the connector with the sensor harness. The probe of a control lamp or measuring device must be connected to the "mass" of the car. The second probe of the measuring device or test lamp should be touched with quick movements tangentially to the middle pin of the speed sensor connector.

With the ignition on, the speedometer needle should move. The more often the sensor is touched, the more readings it should show. If this does not happen, the problem may be in the wiring or speedometer. If your needle is making moves, the speed sensor is faulty. It is impossible to exclude bad contact in the connector from the culprits, try to clean it from oxidation. If this does not help, the sensor must be replaced with a new one. Sometimes the problem can appear after the instrument panel has rusted. This can happen after moisture has entered through a leaky windshield seal. Drying the panel and sealing the windshield in some cases solves the problem.

The speed sensor (abbreviated as DS or DSA) is installed on all modern cars and serves to measure the speed of the car and transfer this information to the computer.

How to replace the speed sensor (DS)

  • First of all, you need to turn off the engine, cool it and de-energize the system by removing the battery terminals. This is very important to avoid injury during repair work;
  • if there are parts that impede access to the detector, they must be disconnected. But, as a rule, this device is in stock;
  • the cable block is disconnected from the DC;
  • after which the device itself is directly disassembled. Depending on the brand of the machine and the type of sensor, it can be fastened with threads or latches;
  • a new sensor is installed in place of the faulty sensor;
  • the system is assembled in the reverse order;
  • it remains to start the car and make sure that the new device is working. To do this, it’s enough to drive a little: if the speedometer readings correspond to the real speed, then the repair was carried out correctly.

When buying a DS, it is necessary to strictly observe the brand of the device in order to install exactly the sensor model that will work correctly. For some of them you can find analogues, but you need to carefully study each of them to make sure they are interchangeable.

The process of replacing the detector itself is not complicated, but if you do not know how to replace it, or if a novice motorist has a problem, you should contact a service station and entrust your car to specialists.

In any case, before starting to repair a car, you should carefully study the instructions and manuals, as well as strictly follow the recommendations and schemes described in the manuals.

Signs of a malfunctioning speed sensor

The most common sign that a speed sensor has failed is idle problems. If the car stalls at idle (when shifting gears or coasting), among other things, be sure to check the speed sensor. Another sign that the speed sensor isn't working is a speedometer that doesn't work at all or doesn't work properly.

Most often, the problem is an open circuit, so the first step is to visually inspect the speed sensor and its contacts. If there are traces of corrosion or dirt, they must be removed, the contacts cleaned and Litol applied to them.

Checking the speed sensor can be done in two ways: with the removal of the DSA and without it. In both cases, a voltmeter will be required to check and diagnose the speed sensor.

The first way to check the speed sensor:

  • remove speed sensor
  • determine which terminal is responsible for what (the sensor has three terminals in total: ground, voltage, pulse signal),
  • connect the input contact of the voltmeter to the pulse signal terminal, ground the second contact of the voltmeter to a metal part of the engine or car body,
  • when the speed sensor rotates (for this you can throw a piece of pipe on the sensor shaft), the voltage and frequency on the voltmeter should increase.

The second way to check the speed sensor:

  • raise the car so that one wheel does not touch the ground,
  • connect the contacts of the voltmeter to the sensor in the same way as described above,
  • spin the raised wheel and control the change in voltage and frequency.

Please note that these test methods are only suitable for a speed sensor that uses the Hall effect in operation.

Replacing the wheel speed sensor on the Kia Sid

I recently had ABS issues on my Kia Seed. Diagnostics showed that the wheel speed sensor needs to be replaced. It is worth noting that this is the only component of the system that can be replaced independently; in other cases, you cannot do without special equipment and an experienced craftsman. Since I can change the sensor myself, I need to do this business. I also need to insure the car, but I can’t decide on the type of insurance yet.

From tools and fixtures, we bought a hex key for 5 and a multimeter. We remove the negative contact from the battery, then we raise the car on the right side and remove the wheel. We find the wheel speed sensor there and pull out the plug from there. Next, unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the idle speed sensor from the hole in the steering knuckle of the front suspension.

We remove the sensor and install a new one in its place in the reverse order. I was advised to change all the sensors at once, so I took four at once and did the same work with the other sides. The top three shifted very quickly, but there were problems with the rear right. No, everything is the same there, only the mounting bolt did not want to leave. I smeared a special liquid there, then put on the head, tried to pull hard, but only managed to tear off all the edges.

And what to do next? Do not leave the sensor in this state? In any case, you will have to unscrew it, and then I had to ask a friend for help. The fact is that he likes to tinker with cars and is constantly doing something in the garage. I drove up to him, described the situation to him, he jacked up my car, removed the wheel, made a couple of movements, and the blockage went away.

Moreover, he also picked up a new bolt for me and gave me some advice on how to act in such situations after replacing the sensors, the ABS system on the Kia Sid works flawlessly. A couple of times, thanks to her, I managed to avoid a collision, so the option is really useful. If desired, it can even be installed separately in a car where it is not provided by the manufacturer.

Speed sensor.

Good afternoon, dear forum users.

Today I have a very unpleasant story. I left the store, put the bags in the trunk, started the car and decided to get some water.

I opened the doors and went to the trunk (not forgetting to close the driver's door on strangers).

I go to the trunk, but it won't open. Well, I think it's not unlocked. I will unlock it again.

I try to open the driver's door - CLOSED. I pull the rest of the doors, also locked. I look into the living room: no one, the keys are in the lock, the car is moving, there are a lot of burning symbols on the dashboard.

In a panic, I start dancing around the car, pulling hair and body hair out of my hands.

A minute later I understand that I need to run for the second set of keys. Fortunately, the tags remained with me and the car is not going anywhere.

As a result, when I unlocked the car (I just opened it with an iron key), I saw a complete list of errors on the dashboard (check, ESP, ABS, etc.) and a speedometer needle dancing about 50 km / h. After the restart, the situation repeated itself: after turning the ignition key, the speedometer needle jumped to a hundred and the system error icons lit up.

Deciding to go home, I set out very slowly. At this point, the icons were turned off and the system started working normally. But while driving, the situation changed: ESP tried to get me out of the skid, stopping at a traffic light and pulling away, although the speed (real) was 5-10 km / h.

I had to disable the ESP as the roads were fine.

A friend complained about the speed sensor: they say it got wet, turned sour and fell off.

Tomorrow I will go to the OD on Savelovskaya, let's see what kind of pain came out this time.

Wiring Diagram - Vehicle Speed Control System

Speed sensor Kia Sid 2013

Description of the scheme

1. The ESP ABS control module receives the vehicle speed signal from the front and rear wheel speed sensors and transmits it to the ECM and MICOM on the instrument panel via the CAN bus.

2. The MICOM block on the instrument panel uses the received vehicle speed data to display the current speed and control the speedometer. It also converts the speed data into a pulse wave that is sent to the AV head unit with navigation, audio system, panoramic roof control unit and diagnostic socket.

Vehicle speed signal functions

1. The ABS/ESP vehicle speed value is compared with the engine RPM. This determines the optimum fuel injection, ignition timing and gear changes.

2. Board:

1) Vehicle speed data received from the ABS / ESP unit is transmitted to the components

(AV head unit with navigation, audio system, panoramic sunroof, diagnostic socket) through the instrument panel wiring (M01: #2).

2) In addition, vehicle speed data received from ABS/ESP is sent to

(ECU and key, IPS control unit, BCM, digital clock, IMS controller unit) via B-CAN (MD1: No. 25/26).

Components (connecting wiring)

(1) AV head unit with navigation audio system: Used to control DMB.

(2) Panoramic sunroof: The vehicle speed signal is used to correct the operation of the sunroof motor when the sunroof is closed at high speed.

(3) Diagnostic connector: The vehicle speed signal is used for the scanner.

Components (B-CAN)

(1) Smart key ECU: Start control (prevents the engine from stopping while driving even if the stop button has been pressed).

(2) IPS control unit: monitors and diagnoses low/high beams, parking lights and fog lights. After receiving the CAN signal from the BCM, the lamp output is controlled. The control status and diagnostic result are transmitted to the BCM via the CAN bus.

(3) BCM: automatic door lock control and ignition key reminder.

(4) Digital clock: shows the outside temperature.

(5) Driver IMS: The signal is used to prevent seat malfunction while driving.

1. Since the vehicle speed data is transmitted via the CAN communication protocol, it is necessary to check the operation of the data link.

2. Can the pulse signal converted by MICOM in the instrument cluster be checked at the data link connector? contact (M10: No. 6) or instrument cluster (M01: No. 2).
