DPF filter. What is the reason for its removal?

DPF filter. What is the reason for its removal? Smog has been the number one topic in recent weeks. In Poland, its cause is the so-called. low emissions, i.e. dust and gases from industry, households and transport. What about drivers who decide to cut out the DPF filter?

Transport is considered to be the source of only a few percent of harmful dust emissions, but these are average figures. In large cities such as Krakow or Warsaw, transport accounts for almost 60 percent. emissions of pollutants. This is strongly influenced by diesel vehicles, which emit much more harmful exhaust gases than gasoline vehicles. In addition, drivers who decide to cut out the particulate filter responsible for burning harmful particles unknowingly contribute to the deterioration of air quality.

Short distance - high radiation

In cities with a large number of diesel cars, smog levels and the risk of cancer are significantly increased, since particulate matter coming out of the exhaust pipe is highly carcinogenic. The greatest emission of soot and compounds toxic to our body is observed when starting the engine and operating at low temperatures. In the initial moments of engine operation, each additional opening of the throttle also means an increase in soot emissions.

The part that matters

To reduce excessive exhaust emissions, diesel car manufacturers equip their vehicles with a diesel particulate filter that performs two important functions. The first is to capture particulate matter from the engine, and the second is to burn it inside the filter. This filter, like all parts in a car, wears out over time and needs to be replaced or regenerated. In search of savings, some drivers decide to completely remove the filter, unaware that in doing so they significantly increase the level of emissions of harmful compounds into the atmosphere.

Delete - don't go

The increasingly frequent problem of smog in large metropolitan areas is likely to lead to more attention to car exhaust emissions in the future, as is the case outside of our country. For example, in Germany, if we are caught driving a car without a particulate filter during a scheduled inspection, we will be severely punished. Fines are even several thousand euros, and it will be unacceptable to continue driving such a vehicle. Poland, as a member of the European Union, is bound by the same exhaust emission standards. Therefore, vehicles with a cut particulate filter or without a catalytic converter should not undergo periodic inspection, and the diagnostician should not allow them to operate. Drivers of vehicles that have had components such as the particulate filter or catalytic converter removed will have to reinstall them.

How to protect yourself?

To protect yourself from the ever-present smog, it's worth investing in a good cabin air filter. Its role is to filter the air entering the car interior. There are traditional and carbon filters on the market. The activated carbon in the filter has the ability to absorb various substances. In practice, this means that the filter absorbs not only solid elements (pollen, dust), but also some of the unpleasant gases. Thanks to the cabin filter, cleaner air enters the lungs of the driver and passengers. The cabin air filter should be replaced regularly - ideally twice a year - in spring and autumn. A good quality carbon filter costs several zlotys.
