DS 3 Crossback e-Tense - Range up to 285 km at 90 km/h, up to 191 km at 120 km/h [test by Bjorn Nayland]

The DS 3 Crossback E-Tense is the PSA Group's electric crossover based on the battery drive also used in the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-2008. The lineup of the car tested by Nyland will tell us what to expect from the e-2008 and the new Opel Mokka (2021). Conclusions? We get a car that can be safely charged once a week when driving around the city, but on the road, speed is required.

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, Specifications:

  • segment: B-SUVs,
  • battery: ~ 45 (50) kWh,
  • power: 100 kW (136 HP)
  • torque: 260 Nm,
  • drive: FORWARD,
  • reception: 320 WLTP units, about 270-300 km in real range,
  • price: from 159 900 PLN,
  • competition: Peugeot e-2008 (the same group and base), Opel Corsa-e (segment B), BMW i3 (less, more expensive), Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia e-Soul (less premium).

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense Range Test

Let's start with a quick introduction: Nyland tests cars on the same route at 90 and 120 km / h. It operates cruise control and tries to make conditions repeatable. Its dimensions should be considered as values in ideal conditions, especially those that run at around 20 degrees Celsius. The worse the conditions, the weaker the numbers will be.

On the other hand, replacing the rim with a smaller or more aerodynamic one can influence the best result.

DS is by definition a premium brand and therefore tries to compete with Audi and Mercedes. Unfortunately, neither Audi nor Mercedes have any counter-offers for the DS 3 to date, so the car can be combined with a maximum of BMW i3 and Hyundai Kona Electric.

Nyland's tested DS 3 Crossback E-Tense operated in B / Eco mode, so with high regeneration and air conditioning, it was tuned for economical operation. With the battery charged to 97 percent, the car showed a range of 230 kilometers, and only this suggested what result we should expect:

DS 3 Crossback e-Tense - Range up to 285 km at 90 km/h, up to 191 km at 120 km/h [test by Bjorn Nayland]

Cruising range at 90 km / h = 285 kilometers maximum

The result is a very economical ride at a speed of 90 km / h. the real range of DS 3 Crossback E-Tense will be:

  1. up to 285 kilometers when the battery is discharged to 0 percent,
  2. up to 271 kilometers, if discharged to 5 percent (from this moment you can still charge up to 100 kW),
  3. up to 210-215 kilometers, when we will fluctuate within 5-80 percent (for example, the second stage of the route).

Point # 2 is so important that PSA Group vehicles achieve a maximum charging power of 100 kW to 16 percent of the battery capacity. Therefore, it is better to discharge them to about 5 percent than going down to a charging station with a battery showing 15 percent or more of the battery:

> Peugeot e-208 and fast charge: ~ 100 kW only up to 16 percent, then ~ 76-78 kW and gradually decreases

Cruising range at 120 km / h = 191 kilometers maximum

At a speed of 120 km / h on a single charge, the car will be able to cover the following distances:

  1. up to 191 kilometers when the battery is discharged to 0 percent,
  2. up to 181 kilometers, if discharged to 5 percent,
  3. up to 143 kilometers with fluctuations in the range of 5-80 percent.

Thus, if we were traveling in Poland quite comfortably, with one charge, we would have covered about 320 kilometers (2 + 3). If we decide to go a little slower, then we will cover 480 kilometers.

Urban coverage = WLTP and benefits

If this interests us DS 3 Crossback E-Tense coverage in the cityit is worth looking at the value measured using the WLTP procedure. Here it is up to 320 kilometers, so in good weather and normal driving, expect about the same figures: up to 300-320 km. In winter, at low temperatures, you should set the values 2 / 3–3 / 4 of this number, ie. approximately 210-240 kilometers.

And what are the advantages of the electric DS 3? According to Nyland, the car offers more driving comfort, a more spacious interior than the Peugeot e-208 (obviously - it is higher) and better soundproofing.
