Engine 1HD-FT In the mid-90s of the last century, Toyota Corporation produced hardy and reliable power units that could compete in many respects with the most modern engines. One of these units was the legendary 1HD-FT diesel engine.

In terms of its parameters and characteristics, 1HD-FT is not too remarkable, but the experience of its operation makes one think about the genius of Japanese engineers. The unit was first used in the Japanese SUV Land Cruiser 80 series in 1995.

The unit received a significant increase in the amount of horsepower when compared with its predecessor. The Toyota 1HD-FT engine still serves many owners of Japanese SUVs to this day.

Among the advantages, one can single out a huge potential for exploitation, quite demonstrative traction, picking up from the smallest revs. A car equipped with a 1HD-FT internal combustion engine is a pleasure to operate, because you can get excellent acceleration from any gear, and the behavior of the engine at high speeds is not at all like diesel habits.

Diesel also has good fuel consumption. Even units that have traveled more than 500 thousand kilometers do not increase fuel consumption. However, the reviews of the owners highlight several negative aspects of the power unit:

  • a certain tenderness of the injection pump system and the need for its constant maintenance;
  • fairly frequent adjustment of valves on engines with high mileage;
  • in case of serious breakdowns, repair is inappropriate - a new unit is needed.

But these problems and troubles occur already in the second half of a million kilometers. For some drivers, the odometers have gone over a million divisions, and the engine still does not need a major overhaul.

Summing up

It is worth noting that 1HD-FT belongs to the category of internal combustion engines that make it possible to overhaul with a bore of the cylinder block. More modern Toyota engines have a thin-walled block and do not allow such an operation. An overhaul can add several hundred thousand more carefree kilometers to the engine's potential.
