Engine 1HD-FTE
The legendary line of diesel engines from Toyota continues in one of the most successful units - 1HD-FTE. This is practically a copy of the previous engine, which was installed on most of the Land Cruiser 80s produced. The main changes affected the fuel and valve control systems, and turbocharging also appeared.
The latter, however, was assigned the role of not increasing the amount of horsepower, but reducing the threshold for maximum torque. Here, this figure is record low. That is why the 1HD-FTE engine is considered one of the most high-torque of its kind.
Technical features of the unit
Electronic control systems have significantly improved the operation of the power unit and were able to optimize fuel consumption. With a sufficiently large volume, drivers of cars with such a power unit were able to achieve record low consumption rates - about 12 liters in the city and 8-9 liters of diesel fuel in highway mode.

The Toyota 1HD-FTE engine is an excellent solution for an SUV that is operated for its intended purpose. The traction power and strength of the unit cannot be compared with any predecessor. That is why the unit stayed on the conveyor for almost 10 years. It was thoroughly modernized only in 2007.
There is also a version with an intercooler that can develop up to 202 horsepower, but it was produced in small series, so you don’t see such an engine very often.
The main advantages of the engine
The main advantage of this power unit is to maintain the good traditions of the series. ICE 1HD-FTE, using diesel as fuel, does not cause any discomfort to its owners in operation. Starting at any temperature and in any conditions, the internal combustion engine can provide a huge resource and no need for frequent repairs.
Flattering reviews about the operation of the unit allow us to derive the following advantages of its use:
- resource over 500 kilometers;
- fixed fuel supply issues that were present in the previous generation;
- the turbine gives thrust from the lowest revs;
- the engine is subject to major repairs at the end of the resource.
These are great advantages, because the new generation of Toyota engines are deprived of these advantages. One of the drawbacks of the motor, which many Russian drivers talk about, is the complicated valve adjustment, and it is required here quite often. Given the quality of the fuel that most of these units fill with us, this minus is natural.
Summing up
Even if it happens that 1HD-FTE leaves its resource on your car, you can always purchase a contract engine. This will extend the life of the car by several hundred thousand kilometers.
The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 100 became the area for using the engine. The unit was also installed for a short time on the Toyota Coaster bus in the late 90s of the last century.
