3GR-FSE 3.0 Lexus engine

The Lexus 3GR-FSE engine was a 3-liter V6 gasoline engine, which was used most often on the 300rd generation Lexus GS 3. Effectively replaced in-line six-cylinder engine 2JZ-GEThe key features of the 3GR-FSE were the aluminum block and block head, as well as direct fuel injection and variable intake and exhaust valve phases (VVT-i system).

3GR-FSE Lexus GS 300 engine specifications

This engine is 39 kg lighter than its predecessor 2JZ and weighs 174 kg without fluids. Naturally, the relief came from the transition from cast iron to aluminum block.

Lexus GS300 3GR-FSE 3 liter engine problems

The engineers did a good job on the power structure - the absence of an exhaust gas recirculation system significantly reduced the problem of soot in the intake manifold and on all moving parts associated with it. But still, this engine can hardly be called reliable.

Small problems that the owner of 3GR-FSE may face:

  • maslozhor - most often it is engine wear, or problems with rings;
  • floating speed - dirty throttle;
  • problems with oxygen sensors - if an error has appeared on them, then ignoring the problem for a long time is not recommended. due to a regularly rich mixture, fuel will enter the oil;
  • knocking when starting the engine - the VVT-i system, is solved by installing other intake camshaft stars (catalog numbers - 13050-31071, 31081, 31120, 31161, 31162, 31163).

Experience has shown that high oil consumption is a common feature of all GR-FSE engines, so consumption below 200-300 ml / 1000 km is considered “normal” even for engines with low mileage, while active measures to eliminate are applied after oil consumption in the region of 600-800 ml per thousand km.

Problem 5 cylinder - the most popular

The key problem of the 5th cylinder in the 3GR-FSE is overheating, the occurrence or deformation of the rings and the destruction of the cylinder walls.

Problem 5 cylinder Lexus GS 300 3GR-FSE

Structurally, the cooling system does not properly cool the 5th cylinder, since the coolant flows through the channels from the first to the 5th, that is, while the coolant passes more than half of the block, it will already pick up a temperature higher than the initial one.

The process of destruction of the 5th cylinder:

  • short-term local overheating, which most likely will not be noticed and operation will continue;
  • gradual destruction of CPG units, which increases oil consumption;
  • further operation, especially if at some point the engine is allowed to run at high revs (for example, on the highway at a speed of over 150 km / h) for a long time, then the rings become stuck, after which the oil burns, loss of compression in the 5th cylinder and inevitable destruction of the cylinder walls.

The problem is compounded when the radiators become clogged (even very slightly). The car has a low stance and the radiators get more dirty than cars with high ground clearance.

Recommendation: if you own a Lexus GS300 with this engine, flush the radiators and the space BETWEEN them from different sides several times a year, especially after the season when there is especially a lot of dirt.

Tuning 3GR-FSE

The 3GR-FSE engine is absolutely unsuitable for tuning, as it was developed for the quiet driving of business sedans. Even the compressor kits from TOMS bypassed this engine. Various solutions to improve the response of the accelerator pedal - minor toys, will give minor changes that you will never feel and spend the budget.

Ideally, pick up a car with an engine that is already loyal to tuning or swap a more suitable engine.
