Chevrolet F16D3 engine

Serial production of the F16D3 engine began in 2004 and ended in 2007. The new motor came to replace the F14D3. Many design ideas were borrowed from the scheme of the Opel Z16XE power unit known at that time. Remaining 3 years on the assembly line, the engine earned a lot of commendable reviews, so it was decided to continue its production in the form of modified F16D4 and F18D4.

This is the usual in-line "four". The block is cast from a durable material, the cylinders themselves are made in the cylinder head housing. The latter is made of lightweight aluminum alloy. The cylinder head layout is designed in such a way that cooling is improved and cross-purging of the internal components of the internal combustion engine is provided.

The F16D3 motor belongs to the Ecotech family. Here are collected exclusively motors with 4 valves of spark plugs, located in the middle of each cylinder. Thus, inside the engine, a priori, the DOHC distribution scheme has found application. Two 16-valve camshafts need careful care from the owner.

Other features:

  • timing drive - belt type;
  • ignition and distributed injection systems - electronic;
  • cooling - automatic, carried out in a circle of a closed type;
  • universal ICE lubrication system - the lubricant goes to rubbing surfaces under pressure, is sprayed through special channels in the walls of the cylinder head and cylinders;
  • spare parts are interchangeable with other modifications and analogues, which is very convenient for repairs.

Maintenance, weak nodes

There are not quite the same requirements for servicing the F16D3 engine. Basically, it depends on the specific car on which it is installed. For example, when operating a motor on a Chevrolet Cruz, such events should be carried out.

  1. Change fuel and lubricant filters, renew the lubricant every 10-15 thousand km.
  2. After the 50th run, replace the air filter.
  3. Monitor spark plugs constantly, change after 50-60 thousand km.
  4. Every 100 thousand km, check the timing belt and rollers.
  5. After 240 thousand km, change the refrigerant.

For other models, the regulation provided.

  1. Oil change after the same period of time.
  2. Replacing candles earlier than usual - after 40-45 thousand kilometers.
  3. Replacing the timing belt and rollers no later than the 40th run.
  4. Replace antifreeze every 2 years.

The difference in maintenance is due to the features of the valve system. The Chevrolet Cruze used a modernized version of the F16D3 engine, with calibrated glasses. This significantly increased the reliability of the power plant, but forced, in addition to the main work, to also adjust the valves. This can be done after the 100th run of the car.

F16D3 is easy to maintain. In general, the motor is reliable, but there are some disadvantages that negatively affect functionality. Experts identify several nodes that, in their opinion, are the weak points of this engine.

  1. Electronic exhaust control circuit.
  2. CVCP system.
  3. Valve compensators are hydraulic.

The load on these nodes leads to unstable engine operation, especially in the XX mode. Starting is also disturbed, oil and fuel consumption increases.

Modifications

To eliminate the above errors, it was decided to improve the engine. Extensive work was carried out, the GDS phase adjustment unit was updated, and automatic valve regulators were replaced with a calibrated version.

Another modification of the F18D4, unlike its predecessors, has more power. This was achieved by increasing the volume of the cylinders. It also turned out to increase the resource of the timing belt by 50%. Another useful innovation was the replacement of the working parts of the valves with products made of soft, but corrosion-resistant metals.

Reviews

NexovodThe people, as far as I know, 1.6 is the engine from Laceti 1.8 from Astra, but at the expense of 1.8 that this is an old Opel engine, it’s understandable, but 1.6 to Laceti, where did it stand ?! It seems that Nexia or Cavo has information more precisely, let's analyze the story about 1.8, it's also interesting.
BillWell, these engines began to be installed on Nexia last, relatively recently
VrnenkoAccording to the GM worker I spoke with, the F16D3 was the evolution of an Opel engine that I received with a cadet. There is an opinion that this is the same engine that was installed on asters produced at the turn of the century. The same GM sheep said that the engines were simply similar and assured that the engine building of Daewoo and Opel at that time was moving in parallel courses, i.e. branches of development were different. Opel engines were called either Z16XE or A16XE, I don’t remember now. Later, a variable valve timing mechanism was added to the F16D3 and the engine became known as the F16D4. The same was done by the Opelevites, the Z16XER engine was born. Again, we must assume that these are somewhat different engines, otherwise why bother with a garden with different names. Those. managers' assurances that in Korean cruises there is an Opel 1,6 engine, from the evil one. I can't say for sure about the 1,8 engine. If the documents say Z18XER, then this is from Opel. If something else, it means that Daewoo minders have put their hands in there too. F16D3 was put on the Lacetti, then appeared on the Nexia, and now on the cruises.
ShugGuys, both engines are antediluvian, but bylm constantly upgraded! 1,6 was on the Astra G and Lache!
Lyoshkaand where are the f16d 3 engines produced?
PhilSomewhere in the topic about timing, I wrote a history of mutations of what is now F16D3 a couple of months ago. The place of assembly is Poryon, Korea, the old Daewoo factory, there are 2 more factories in China, but the motor comes to us only from Korea, there is a suspicion that it is assembled there from different components, both Korean and Chinese. they often differ in casting, molding, etc. On Korean cars with F16D4 and F18D4, everything is simpler - there is an assembly of the same factory from honestly indicated Chinese spare parts. Shushariki 1,8 - a Hungarian-made motor from fascist components.
AlessandroIn the instruction manual, completely different engine models are written. LDE, 2H0, LXT. What are these engines?
LemurThese are internal catalog designations GM, LXT - F16D3; LDE - F16D4, or Z16XER (Korean / German classification); 2H0 - F18D4, or Z18XER
