Hyundai G4EH engine

Technical characteristics of a 1.3-liter gasoline engine G4EH or Hyundai Accent 1.3 liters 12 valves, reliability, resource, reviews, problems and fuel consumption.

The 1.3-liter 12-valve Hyundai G4EH engine was produced in Korea from 1994 to 2005 and was installed on the first two generations of the Accent model and the European versions of the Getz before restyling. In Russian-language sources, this motor is very often confused with its carbureted versions of the G4EA.

The Alpha series also includes: G4EA, G4EB, G4EC, G4ED, G4EE, G4EK and G4ER.

Description of the engine device G4EH 1.3 liters

In 1994, two 1.3-liter engines of the Alpha family debuted on the Hyundai Accent model: one carburetor under the G4EA index and the second G4EH with distributed fuel injection. By design, these power units were very similar to Mitsubishi engines of that time: a cast-iron cylinder block and an aluminum 12-valve SOHC head with hydraulic lifters, a simple timing belt drive, and there is also a completely modern ignition system with coils.

Engine number G4EH is located in front, at the junction of the block with the head

The first modifications of the engine with distributed fuel injection developed 60 and 75 hp, then a more powerful version of the 85 hp engine appeared on the second generation Accent. It is the second modification of this power unit that is known in many sources as the G4EA.

Reviews on the G4EH engine, its pros and cons

Advantages:

  • Simple engine design with no weak points
  • Common and inexpensive spare parts
  • Not very picky about fuel quality
  • And hydraulic lifters are provided here

Disadvantages:

  • The motor regularly worries about trifles
  • Not the most durable oil pump
  • Often consumes oil after 200 km
  • When the belt breaks, the valve usually bends.

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the G4EH engine

Floating revolutions

This is a fairly reliable motor and the main complaints are related to its unstable operation. The causes are usually clogged nozzles, contamination of the throttle assembly or IAC, as well as contacts on candles, cracked ignition coils and high-voltage wires.

Hydraulic compensators

The units of this family are distinguished by a not very large resource of hydraulic lifters, often they begin to knock even before 80 km of run, and many owners change them. The cause may be a drop in lubricant pressure due to wear on the oil pump plunger.

Timing belt break

The timing belt is designed for 60 or 90 thousand kilometers, depending on the version of the unit, but very often it bursts earlier and usually ends with a bend in the valves. When replacing the belt, it is better to install a new water pump, because its resource is also small.

Maslozhor

After 200 km, the power unit can consume up to one liter of oil per 000 km. The culprits are usually hardened valve stem seals and need to be replaced. The reason may be stuck rings, but then it’s really possible to get by with just decarbonizing.

Other disadvantages

The weak points of this motor include an unreliable starter, short-lived engine mounts, regular lubricant leaks and the appearance of a Check Engine due to a burnt muffler corrugation. Also, the emergency shutdown of the fuel supply is very often triggered here.

The manufacturer claims the resource of the G4EH engine is 200 km, but it also runs up to 000 km.
