Hyundai G4GB engine

Technical characteristics of a 1.8-liter gasoline engine G4GB or Hyundai Matrix 1.8 liters, reliability, resource, reviews, problems and fuel consumption.

The 1.8-liter 16-valve Hyundai G4GB engine was produced by the company from 2001 to 2010 and was installed on such popular models of the Korean concern as Matrix, Elantra and Cerato. There were two different modifications of the unit: 122 hp. 162 Nm and 132 hp 166 Nm.

The Beta family also includes internal combustion engines: G4GC, G4GF, G4GM and G4GR.

Description devices motor G4GB 1.8 liters

In 2001, a 1.8-liter unit debuted as part of the second generation of the Beta family of internal combustion engines. It was a fairly typical engine for that time with distributed fuel injection, an in-line cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head without hydraulic lifters and a combined timing drive from a belt and a short chain between two camshafts.

Engine number G4GB is located on the right, above the gearbox

Unlike the 2.0-liter brother in the line, this unit did not have a version with a phase regulator and existed in two modifications of different power: 122 hp. 162 Nm of torque, as well as 132 hp. 166 Nm of torque, which in fact were distinguished only by the firmware of the control unit.

Reviews on the G4GB engine, its pros and cons

Advantages:

  • Simple and reliable motor design
  • Normally consumes our 92nd gasoline
  • No problems with service or parts.
  • And the donor on the secondary will be inexpensive

Disadvantages:

  • Consumes relatively a lot of fuel
  • Regular leakage of grease through the seals
  • Bends the valve when the timing belt breaks
  • And hydraulic lifters are not provided

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the G4GB engine

Floating revolutions

This is a simple in design and very reliable unit, and most of the complaints on the forum are related to the unstable operation of the internal combustion engine and, in particular, floating idle speeds. As with many other motors, the main cause is throttle or IAC contamination.

Ignition system

Another weak point of this motor is a very capricious ignition system: ignition coils and high-voltage wires and contacts on candles are often changed here.

Timing belt break

According to the manual, the timing belt changes every 60 km and such a short schedule is not without reason, since breaks at high mileage occur regularly and usually with valve bending.

Other disadvantages

Also here, oil constantly climbs from under the valve cover and the internal combustion engine supports do not serve much. And do not forget to adjust the thermal clearance of the valves, since there are no hydraulic compensators.

The manufacturer declared the resource of the G4GB engine at 200 km, but it also runs up to 000 km.
