Mercedes-Benz OM601 engine

Mercedes-Benz is rightfully considered an innovator in the use of diesel units in passenger cars. Back in 1935, the 260th appeared with a diesel engine. It was the first generation of OM, developing a good power for that time - 43 hp. With. Today's OM601 is an 88-horsepower in-line, 4-cylinder engine that consumes about 7 liters of fuel.

Development of the OM series

Diesel Mercedes units have remained reliable and durable since that time. The unique design, brought to the ideal, a huge supply of fortress and materials of excellent quality are the hallmark of this power unit. On the other hand, according to fuel consumption, specific gravity and dynamics, this internal combustion engine is inferior to analogues from other companies.

It is noteworthy that the second generation of OM series engines comes out in 1961. It was a 2 liter OM621. After another 7 years, the OM615 comes out with a working volume of 2 and 2.2 liters.

Description of Diesel OM601

A 4-cylinder diesel unit with three displacement options is the OM601. The younger variation of this engine has a volume of 1977 cm3, the older one - 2299 cm3, and the average for the American market - 2197 cm3. The latest version is manufactured to meet all US requirements for CO2 emissions. Therefore, the motor is somewhat strangled programmatically.

The structural diagram of the OM601 engine is the following combination:

  • pre-chamber option;
  • aluminum cylinder head;
  • steel block;
  • upper circuit with adjustable valve clearance;
  • valve drive lever;
  • timing chain double-row with hydraulic tensioner, duplex, driven by the crankshaft;
  • the oil pump is activated by a separate, single-row circuit;
  • Bosch type fuel pump in-line.

In general, the motor is exceptionally reliable, it has no obvious shortcomings. However, many experts do not like the large dimensions and weight, coupled with stuffing box packing on the back of the crankshaft. The latter does not differ in durability, has a limited resource.

Typical faults

Repair of fuel pump

The old Mercedes-Benz diesel units enjoyed incredible endurance. Unfortunately, this cannot be said about the new motors. Due to the complicated design, a large number of nodes and elements fall into the risk group. It is good that this does not apply to CPG, which is characterized by high strength. The turbine and dual-mass flywheel are also of excellent quality.

Consider the most typical problems that are possible on the OM601 engine:

  • difficult start-up, which is often associated with wear of the high-pressure fuel pump or, less often, with malfunctions in the injection system;
  • a noticeable decrease in power and speed, which is due to a malfunction of the damper mechanism installed in the intake manifold;
  • excessively slow heating of the motor installation caused by damage to the thermostat;
  • unexpected transition of the engine to emergency mode - stop, which is associated with malfunctions of the injectors;
  • noise and knocks caused by problems with the timing chain.

The simpler the design of the Mercedes-Benz internal combustion engine, the more durable the engine. Conversely, the more complex the design, the faster it fails.

ZhorzhikI took 190stick from my father for experiments. The car was produced in 1992, in a special version of a taxi. Motor 601, box - 4MKPP. I don’t want the 606th motor - it’s heavy, the 601 is weak. Actually, they are looking for the optimum so that they eat little on the highway (sometimes a fishing trip takes up to 250 km one way), but it was not frankly weak, like the 601st. Another question - which is better, to put 5MKPP or automatic? I would like not high engine speeds at cruising 120-140 km / h, since my main car is Mazda 6 MPS, and there it is 140 kop / min in top gear at 3.5 km / h, and this is very annoying.
BrabusIf you want low revs on the highway, then put a 5 mortar and some kind of gearbox 2,87 .. But then you need a dviglo with a good moment. Swap 602 turbo or blow in 601, put common rail. 603 why don't you have an engine?
ZhorzhikI don't see much of a problem with swapping. Blowing into the 601st is blasphemy, specifically my copy has clearly run more than a million. 602 turbo - very rare, I've been monitoring announcements for several months now - only the atmosphere is bearded. 603 is, to put it mildly, heavy for her, and apparently, it is not much better than 605, and the last one is clearly less consumption. There is also an option to drag a car kit from England, s250td, on the machine. But I'm not sure which pump it costs.
Gold MemberOn the oldmerin, Gazelist sells 2,5TD from 124 for 40000 rubles. It’s not particularly rare either, it’s just that some spare parts for it are one and a half times more expensive than for aspirated. Turbine, again, requirements for oil quality and replacement interval. At 602 with automatic transmission, I have about 100 rpm at 2900 km / h, for a turbo it will be 2500. Turbo consumption is obviously higher. 602 put the atmosphere and don't worry. Diesel pre-chamber it is not to tumble.
ZhorzhikWhat is the fuel consumption of a 2.5 aspirated? I think the 605th will be the optimum, it is a little more powerful than the 602nd. Just recently, one owner of the 124th about how he changed his 601st to the 604th 2.2 from C-shki. According to him, the high-pressure fuel pump got up without alterations from the 601st, from the add. changes, in addition to the engine itself, an oil cooler appeared under the hood (??? is it really on 2.2 atmo that it comes in the base ???). As the owner put it, the car is unrecognizable after that.
Gold MemberAccording to the passport, at 602 atmosphere, the consumption is city / highway 90 / highway 120 on a five-speed handle 8,6 / 5,5 / 7,1 on a four-speed automatic transmission 8,3 / 6,0 / 7,7. The turbo does not have much more: on the handle 9,3 / 5,6 / 7,6 on the machine 8,5 / 6,0 / 7,9. It must be understood that the data are given for ideal conditions (horizontal highway, excellent car roll (the calipers do not wedge, the convergence / collapse is correct), good tires 185/65), high-quality fuel and, most importantly, a new engine. In real life, the cost will be higher. I won’t say anything about the 604 and 605, I didn’t ride them.
SamarinYes, and also, in my opinion, on the 605th injection pump control is already electronic, and by rearranging the injection pump from the 602nd there will be no such power and consumption, this must be taken into account. With the 604th, in my opinion, the same story. By the way, there are already six varieties of the 604th engines
TheodoreDiesels before the common rail are not all peppy. Put gasoline, 111th engine. cheap and cheerful.
VipI have a 602 turbo, the flow rate in the city is 8,5-9,5 in the summer, up to 11 liters in the winter. On highway 6-7. Turnovers 5mkpp 2500 at 110 km / h, 3500 at 140 190 km / h on the navigator accelerated, rides. But a comfortable speed is around 120
ZhorzhikI already have one gas station. Consumption of 20-25 liters in the city causes a complete disgust for gasoline engines. I need a Mercedes purely for fishing to ride + travel long distances. My father has been riding this Mercedes for 12 years already - no problems, the consumption is small, there is nothing to break. I just do not like its power, overtaking is difficult. Where Mazda shoots in seconds from 90 to 160, Mercedes needs an eternity. So the plans are 5MKPP instead of 4MKPP and a more powerful motor. Can otkapitalit 601, stick 6MKPP and replace the gearbox. True, then you have to click the gears at the speed of light
TheodoreNo box will help the 601st. By itself, a stunted motor. The consumption of a normal 111 on the highway will be about 8 liters (in the city about 11), the 602, which will be noticeably deader when overtaking on the highway, will take about 6,5 liters. and if you will fire it up to 140k, then the same 8l. 605th - much more hemorrhagic in the service staff, there is one replacement of glow plugs which is worth it.
ZhorzhikWell, here it is 8 at 140, and for 111, as I understand it, this consumption will be at 100 km / h. I have a pug at 100 eats a figure eight, and at 140 already 13 liters
Gold MemberI have not heard about six-steps on these motors ....
ZhorzhikI broke through the topic, M111 costs 4 times cheaper than OM605. In general, an interesting idea, but 2.3 / 2.5-16 immediately comes to mind. Can take the M111, and play around with the shafts / valves / porting, given the price of this motor, a good reserve for tuning money
UrbanBetter take 111 with a compressor. It will be several times cheaper than your games with the same power and much more torque.
Haremany years ago, my classmate had a w203 2.3 compressor, he rode well, but he had a decent appetite.
Zhorzhikit’s time to disassemble the car, adjust the new engine and take it to the sandblasting, but I can’t decide on the engine. I’ll probably try to find out at the Belarusian MB club about 124 with 2.2 M111 and 2.5 OM605 in order to take a ride and evaluate for myself what you need. In principle, the stock m111 is clearly beyond the eyes, besides, it is 4 times cheaper than the 605th ... but as for me, a Mercedes should be either diesel or very fast
Chain 4I can offer a 604th 2.2 assembly and a 5-mortar mechanic. taken with a swap kit from the 202nd from Europe. price for a set of 35 thousand! what else is needed for happiness?
RamirezThe most trouble-free installation is 602 atmospheric (I replaced 601 with 602), it rides more cheerfully, but still not enough. Gearbox 5 mortar, cruising speed 110-120, then the engine becomes very audible. 604.912 is slightly superior in performance to 602, but it is lighter - this is important.
KazachokIn 604, the weak point is its electronic lucas equipment, which no one normally repairs, as was written above, you can replace it with equipment from 601 and happiness will still be optimal 604 with equipment from 601 and a 5 mortar kit for 35 thousand, which is offered above is very tempting to consider
ZhorzhikLet me remind you the input data: 1991, om601, 4MKPP. The decision was made - 606 turbo + injection pump from 603 turbo. There are a couple of questions left - what kind of gearbox and gearbox to look for? At the initial stage, I will not do any modifications with the high-pressure fuel pump. Over time, perhaps the pump will go to the frenzied Norwegians for revision.
BrabusThere 330Nm! Call Krosh. KOrobasy from 102 and 103 motors will break. The medium-sized gearbox will not pull either.
StrollerThe motor is complex. When factory installed, it is difficult and expensive to maintain! I see no reason to put it in 190 tick.
ZhorzhikWhy is it expensive to maintain? Pump from 603, like there are no special problems. 606 atmospheres go to 124 without any problems. What caused the difficulty? In my opinion, it is not much more difficult to implement the 104th, which is essentially very similar to the 606
