  • N46B20U2 136 HP at 180 Nm (2004-2007): version has a different intake manifold (not DISA) as well as a different exhaust camshaft;
  • N46B20O0 143 HP at 200 Nm (2004-2007);
  • N46B20O1 150 HP at 200 Nm (2004-2007);
  • N46NB20 170 HP at 210 Nm (2007-2012): Similar in design to the 150 hp version, but with a new cylinder head cover and exhaust system. The Bosch MV17.4.6 control system has been added to it.

The N46B20 engine was installed in cars such as the BMW 118i E87, BMW 120i E87, BMW 318i E46, BMW 318i E90, BMW 320i E90, BMW 520i E60, BMW X1 E84, BMW X3 E83, BMW Z4 E85.

BMW engine operation requires the use of 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil - it should be changed every 10-12 km. km or XNUMX months. The tank volume for this product is 4,25 liters. 

Using the drive unit - the most common problems and how to solve them

The N46B20 engine is deservedly considered a low-failure unit. With proper operation, maintenance and regular checks, the engine does not cause serious problems.

However, there are failures associated with high mileage or the natural operation of individual nodes. It is worth finding out which of them appear most often.

The engine may consume too much oil

The first problem that occurs most frequently is excessive oil consumption. Usually the reason is the use of a low-quality substance - not marked by BMW as a recommended oil. Damaged valve stem seals, then piston rings. This is most noticeable on a run of about 50 km. km.

Items that will start to leak after running the specified number of kilometers also include a valve cover gasket or a damaged vacuum pump. In such situations, it is necessary to replace the components.

Vibration and noise reduce driving comfort

In many cases, vibrations are also strongly felt. At the moment when the 2.0-liter unit begins to resonate too intensely, it is worth considering a thorough cleaning of the Vanos variable valve timing system.

Not only vibration disturbs the smooth operation of the drive unit. The engine may also make too much noise. This is usually due to a faulty timing chain tensioner or when this element is stretched. This problem occurs after about 100 km. km. Parts will need to be replaced.

Is the N46B20 engine a good unit?

The successor to the N42 variant is valued for its robust construction, good driving dynamics, as well as an optimal driving culture and high availability of spare parts. The disadvantages include a rather large oil consumption, as well as electrical system failures. It should also be mentioned that it is possible to install an LPG system.

The N46B20 engine can be purchased in vehicles that still have an attractive design and look modern. BMW cars with this engine should first be checked in terms of technical condition. A serviceable N46B20 unit will travel thousands of kilometers without problems.
