Opel C20LET engine

Cars manufactured by Opel are popular in many European countries, as well as among our compatriots. These are relatively budget cars, while they have high build quality and have extensive functionality. There are many reasons why you should opt for the German car industry. In particular, many are interested in the technical equipment of cars.

Each engine that the German manufacturer offers in cars is of high quality. A prominent representative is the C20XE/C20LET engine. This model was designed by specialists from General Motors for use in Opel cars. At the same time, the power unit was also installed on certain models of Chevrolet cars.

History of C20LET

The history of C20LET begins with the creation of the C20XE. C20XE is a 16-valve 2-liter engine. The model was introduced in 1988 and was intended to replace the previous generation of engines. Differences from the previous model consisted in the presence of a catalyst and a lambda probe. Thus, this was the beginning for the creation of an engine in accordance with Euro-1 environmental standards. The cylinder block in the updated engine was made of cast iron. The crankshaft and connecting rods are installed inside the motor.

The block is covered with a sixteen-valve head, which, in turn, is mounted on a 1.4 mm thick gasket. The engine has four intake valves.

The timing drive in the C20XE is belt driven. Every 60000 kilometers it is necessary to replace the timing belt. If this is not done, then there is a high probability of a broken belt, which can lead to more serious engine damage. For this engine, there is no need to adjust the valves, since hydraulic compensators are used here.

It is worth noting that in 1993 the engine was restyled. In particular, it was equipped with a new ignition system without a distributor. The manufacturers also changed the cylinder head, timing, installed a different exhaust camshaft, a new DMRV, 241 cc injectors, and a Motronic 2.8 control unit.

Years later, based on this naturally aspirated engine, a turbocharged model was designed. The differences from the C20XE were the deeper puddle pistons. Thus, this made it possible to reduce the compression ratio to 9. Distinctive features were the nozzles. So, their performance is 304 cc. The turbocharged power unit has become much better than its predecessor and is now used in many OPEL cars.

Service

As for the maintenance of the C20LET internal combustion engine for Opel cars, it practically does not differ from other engines produced by the manufacturer. Every 15 thousand kilometers it is necessary to carry out preventive work. However, it is recommended to service the engine every 10 thousand kilometers. In this case, the oil and oil filter are changed. Diagnosis is also carried out for other engine systems and, if necessary, troubleshooting.

"Advantages and disadvantages"

The motor has several drawbacks, which are known to almost every driver who has encountered the operation of a car on which this power unit is installed.

C20LET engine pros and cons
  1. Antifreeze getting into spark plug wells. In the process of tightening the candles, the recommended tightening torque may be exceeded. As a result, this causes cracks in the cylinder head. It is necessary to change the damaged head to a workable one.
  2. Dieselite. The timing chain tensioner needs to be replaced.
  3. Zhor motor lubrication. The solution to this problem is to replace the valve cover with a plastic one.

As you can see, any problem can be solved, you just have to have the right approach for this.

What cars are used?

The engine of this model is used in such cars of the German manufacturer as Opel Astra F; Caliber Kadett; Vectra A.

In general, this engine model is a very reliable unit, which is characterized by a long service life and reliability. With proper maintenance, serious problems with the operation of the engine will not arise. If maintenance is not performed, then a major overhaul will not be the cheapest procedure. It is likely that you will need to install an engine removed from another car.
