The popularity of the engine building of the General Motors concern is due not only to the quality of workmanship, but also to a wide range of various power units, with which you can provide both the power and dynamics of the car, as well as economy, environmental friendliness and reliability during its operation. One of the most striking examples of the thoughtfulness and foresight of engineers was the Opel Z16YNG engine, which already runs on gas from the factory, in particular on methane.
The development of this power unit was the worldwide struggle to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, as well as the affordable cost of this type of fuel. For the first time the power unit left the assembly line in 2003, but real popularity came to it only three years later, along with the release of the Opel Zafira model, which was able to collect a whole range of various awards and distinctions, officially recognized as the best alternative fuel car.

Common malfunctions and problems in the operation of the Z16YNG
Despite the fact that this is a fairly new segment of engine building, the developers managed to make a power unit of decent quality, which, with proper maintenance, can travel more than one hundred thousand kilometers. In particular, the declared mileage without special repairs is 250-300 thousand km.
However, certain problems in the operation of this equipment still occur:
- catalytic converter failure. The reason is the operation of the car in dusty conditions, the use of low-quality, contaminated fuel and oils. Replacing this equipment costs a lot of money, so most motorists are limited to cutting out this filter element and changing the computer firmware;
- failure of gas injectors. In this engine, 2 sets of them are installed, gas and gasoline, while the first fail almost three times faster than the first. The solution is to replace this equipment with an analogue recommended by the manufacturer;
- problems in the exhaust and intake manifold. The reason is the high wear of the solenoid valve. Repair work involves the replacement of this ICE equipment;
- failure of the gas control unit. Imperfect electronics can cause the most common breakdowns. For replacement, you can use both an original spare part and a similar ECU from gasoline models.
Applicability and possibilities for tuning Z16YNG
Like all Opel power units, the Z16YNG engine can be used on a wide variety of vehicles. During manufacture, it was installed on the model:
- Astra G;
- Combo;
- Combo Tour;
- Corsa C;
- Zafira A;
- Zafira B.
For those who want to install an analogue, you must also pay attention to the Y16YNG motor, with a power of 94 hp. In addition to chipping, there are no special opportunities for tuning this power unit, because its buyers are usually motorists who want to get an economical car, not a supercar.
When replacing a power unit with an analogue, do not forget to check the engine number indicated in the documents with the original without fail. Otherwise, you run the risk of acquiring a stolen or illegal motor and void your warranty. For Z16YNG models, it is located, if you look at the direction of the car, under the oil filter. It looks like a flat area, 1.5 * 5cm in size.
