In the late 90s, the “indestructible” F3R was replaced by a new power unit, the development of which was also based on the well-known 8-valve F3P.

Description

In 1998, the French engine builders of the Renault auto concern designed and put into production a new naturally aspirated F4P engine. In the same year, he was presented at the motor show (Paris) to the world community.

The motor was produced at the Cleon Plant (Cleon, France) until 2005. During the release, it was repeatedly improved, it was the prototype of the modern Renault Duster power unit.

F4P is a 1,8-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 116-120 hp. s and torque 158-170 Nm.

Installed on Renault cars:

  • Lagoon I, II (1998-2005);
  • Mégane I (1999-2003);
  • Scenic I (2001-2003).

Additionally assembled on Proton Waja in 2002-2003.

The main difference from its predecessor is the replacement of a twin-shaft cylinder head (DOHC) with 16 valves equipped with hydraulic compensators.

To cool the pistons, oil nozzles were installed in the cylinder block.

What do the modifications F4P 720, 722, 760, 770, 771, 772, 773, 774, 775 mean

Repeated modernization of the engine contributed to the emergence of its many modifications. The technical characteristics and the mechanical part of the motor have not received significant changes.

The improvement mainly affected attachments. For example, on the F4P 770 the intake manifold was metal, and on the 774 version it was plastic. At the same time, the timing remained the same.

Since 2000, modifications 770-775 were equipped with a phase regulator.

Additionally, the newly developed versions of the F4P had a difference in interfaces with the transmission (manual transmission or automatic transmission) and the mounting of the unit, depending on the model of the car on which it was installed. As an example, the F4P 760 engine (120 hp) was intended only for installation on vehicles with a JB3 or JC5 manual transmission.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

According to car owners and car service specialists, the internal combustion engine is a reliable and durable unit. Its unpretentiousness to minor deviations in operation is noted.

The advantage of the motor is the absence of an oil burner. And this is a direct prerequisite for the durability of the engine.

The presence of hydraulic lifters simplifies maintenance and reduces the number of disassemblies of the unit. At the same time, the expenses of the car owner are reduced - there is no need to go to the service station again, pay for work on adjusting the thermal clearances of the valves.

The simplicity of the internal combustion engine design contributes to high reliability. Here, the catchphrase “The simpler, the more reliable” fully works.

The mileage resource declared by the manufacturer always overlaps by 100-120 thousand km. With gentle operation of the engine, the numbers increase several times.

Weak spots

The presence of weak points is characteristic of each engine. They did not bypass F4P either. Basically, claims from car owners are caused by the electronic filling of the motor. Particularly “unnerving” is the unstable operation of the throttle control ECU, which causes floating speed of the unit. Another problem is short-lived high-voltage ignition coils. All these malfunctions are eliminated at any specialized car service.

The fuel supply system turned out to be rather weak for our gasoline. Clogged injectors and fuel filters contribute not only to loss of power, but also cause complete failure of the engine.

The phase regulator can fail in the first hundred thousand kilometers. Car service mechanics do not undertake to repair it, and the cost of a new one is quite high.

The danger of a broken timing belt is due to bent valves. The belt must be replaced earlier than the recommended period, approximately every 40-50 thousand km.

Oil leakage through seals. Particularly weak here are the crankshaft and camshaft seals, valve cover seals. Malfunctions of this kind are eliminated by replacing unusable elements.

Maintainability
