Description

The production of the motor began in 1998 at the Cleon Plant (the parent company of the concern) and continued for five years. First presented at the Geneva Motor Show at the end of the same year. The internal combustion engine was promoted as the first French unit with direct fuel injection controlled by the IDE system. The sales market was Central and Western Europe.

F5R - four-cylinder gasoline aspirated 2,0-liter, 140 hp. s and a torque of 200 Nm.

Installed on Renault cars:

  • Space (1998-2002);
  • Mégane (1999-2001);
  • Lagoon (2001-2003).

The cylinder block is cast iron, the cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The head has 16 valves and two hollow camshafts.

Timing. The drive is traditionally belt. Installed hydraulic compensators do not require manual adjustment of thermal valve clearances. Roller bearings are installed in the valve seats to reduce friction.

Siemens fuel system (gasoline direct injection) - a distinctive feature of the internal combustion engine, includes:

  • injection pump (pos. 1);
  • fuel rail (pos. 2);
  • nozzles (pos. 3);
  • pressure regulator (pos. 4);
  • pressure sensor (pos. 5).

In addition to the innovative fuel supply system, the engine has another novelty - a cooled intake manifold.

The rest of the nodes and mechanisms have not received significant improvements.

What do the modifications F5R 700, 701, 740 mean

The base model F5R continued to be improved during the release. Modifications created on its basis did not receive significant changes, especially in the mechanical part.

When developing new modifications, the efforts of engineers were aimed at improving the performance of the internal combustion engine. The fuel pressure in the rail was changed, attempts were made to use part of the exhaust gases to prepare the working mixture and other improvements were made (for example, an adjustable three-stage catalyst was introduced on the F5R 740).

The connection of the engine with the transmission also gave rise to new modifications. The F5R 700 was used with a manual transmission on the Megane I, and the F5R 701 was used with an automatic transmission on the Laguna II.

The technical characteristics of the modifications do not differ from the base model.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

Unfortunately, the reliability of the motor raises many doubts. According to experts, he deserves such an assessment thanks to the direct injection fuel system.

But there are also opposite opinions. One of the renovators writes: “… The F5R is a marvel of design… designed for the sporty Megan. It features a smooth torque characteristic in a wide rpm range from 2000 to 5000. According to reviews, it is very sensitive to fuel quality due to the injection pump installed on it, therefore it was not officially delivered to Russia ". He is supported (but not completely) by a car owner from Ryazan: "... The motor is good, but capricious, requires real specialists to maintain, does not like to eat anything".

Despite the disadvantages of the fuel system, the F5R engine is considered by many car owners to be quite reliable, but with strict compliance with all the manufacturer's requirements for its maintenance and operation.

Weak spots

Weaknesses include not quite reliable electrical part. Especially the fuel pressure regulator, some sensors and spark plugs along with high voltage wires.

On the internal combustion engine, nozzles quickly become clogged. The reason is the low quality of the fuel.

The power supply system (IDE) is not performing well. Frequent failures in her work cause a lot of trouble.

These three types of engine weaknesses bring a lot of trouble to its owners.

Maintainability

Engine repairs also cause dissatisfaction among car owners. There are several reasons for this. First, the high cost of spare parts for restoration. Especially expensive is the repair of the fuel system.

Secondly, it is not so easy to find the necessary original spare parts. It is known that the use of analogues, especially used parts, often ends in a waste of money.

Thirdly, even at specialized car services, engine repairs are taken extremely reluctantly. Or they are not taken at all, since there are no specialists in the restoration of this internal combustion engine.

Fourthly, unreasonable repair difficulties causing additional costs. For example, a high-voltage transformer and ignition coils form a single non-separable unit. In the event of failure of one of the coils, you have to change the entire unit. Similarly, at the request of the concern, it is impossible to separate the regulator and the fuel rail during repair.

Based on this, it is not superfluous to consider the option of acquiring a contract engine. Its price ranges from 30 to 60 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration.

The only conclusion can be drawn: Renault engineers tried to create a decent power unit, but the Siemens fuel system prevented them from bringing their ideas to life. Nevertheless, the engine, even with such a disadvantage, takes care of up to 300 thousand km with proper care.
