Renault M5Pt engine
For the first time, French engine builders independently (without the mediation of Nissan) developed a new engine of the TCe line. The main purpose is to install on the flagship and sports models of Renault cars.
Description
The production of the power unit began in 2011 at a plant in Seoul (South Korea). And only in 2017 it was presented for the first time at the international motor show.
The M5Pt engine series has several versions. The first is general purpose, or civil, and two are sports. The difference lies in the power of the unit (see table).
The M5Pt is a 1,8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 225-300 hp. with and torque 300-420 Nm.
Installed on Renault cars:
- Espace V (2017-n/vr);
- Talisman I (2018-n/vr);
- Megane IV (2018-n/vr).
In addition to these models, the engine is installed on the subsidiary Alpine A110 from 2017 to the present.
Aluminum cylinder block lined with steel liners. The cylinder head is also aluminum, with two camshafts and 16 valves. Phase regulators were not installed on the civilian version of the motor, but on the sports ones there were one for each shaft.
The internal combustion engines were not equipped with hydraulic compensators. The thermal clearance of the valves is regulated by the selection of pushers after 80 thousand kilometers of the car.
Timing chain drive. The maintenance-free chain resource is 250 thousand km.
For turbocharging, a low-inertia turbine from Mitsubishi is used. Sports versions of the engine are equipped with more advanced Twin Scroll turbochargers.
Fuel injection system with direct fuel injection.

Reliability
The M5Pt engine is considered a very reliable powertrain, especially when compared to the M5Mt. The turbine has a fairly high service life (200 thousand km). The timing chain also has a large margin of safety.
The absence of phase regulators on the base model of the unit emphasizes its reliability. It is known that they begin to fail after 70 thousand km of car run, sometimes such a nuisance occurs earlier.
With timely and high-quality service, non-aggressive operation, and the use of high-quality technical fluids, the engine is able to work out more than 350 thousand km without any significant breakdowns.
Weak spots
The high reliability of the internal combustion engine does not eliminate the presence of weaknesses. The motor is not suitable for operation at low ambient temperatures.
In cold weather, frosting of the throttle valve and freezing of the crankcase gas line are observed. In the first case, the engine thrust is lost, in the second, oil is squeezed out of the lubrication system (sometimes through the oil dipstick).
Timing drive. With aggressive driving, the chain cannot cope with excessive loads, it stretches. There is a danger of jumping, which will result in bent valves. Such a nuisance manifests itself at 100-120 thousand kilometers.
With a stretch, the lack of hydraulic lifters can be attributed to weak points.
The rest of the breakdowns that occurred are not critical, there are isolated cases (floating idle speed, electrical failures, etc.), the main cause of which is associated with poor engine maintenance.
Maintainability
It should be noted that the internal combustion engine is not distinguished by high maintainability. The main role in this is played by an aluminum (read: disposable) cylinder block. Re-sleeving is only possible on a block suitable for this purpose.
There are no problems in finding the spare parts needed for repair, but here you need to take into account their rather high cost.
If desired, you can find a contract engine and replace it with a failed one.
Thus, the only conclusion can be drawn - the M5Pt engine is a completely reliable unit with strict adherence to the manufacturer's recommendations.
