Toyota 2AR-FSE engine
2AR-FSE is an upgrade of the 2AR-FE ICE. The unit has been produced since 2011 and installed on Toyota Camry, Lexus LS, Lexus IS and other models. Including hybrid versions. The 2AR-FSE version differs from the base engine in the following changes:
- increased compression ratio due to the use of other pistons;
- improved cylinder head with new camshafts;
- modified engine management program;
- combined injection D4-S.
The last one is worth a closer look. Combined injection is the installation in one engine of injectors of direct fuel injection into the cylinder together with injectors of distributed injection into the intake manifold. Direct injection provides the car with a number of advantages:
- more complete combustion of the mixture;
- torque increase;
- economy.
But in some engine operating modes, an excessive amount of soot is emitted into the atmosphere. In this case, it is more rational to use a distributed fuel injection system. The electronic control unit selects the system suitable for this mode of operation, or turns them on at the same time, which makes it possible to improve the parameters of the internal combustion engine without harming the environment.

Advantages and disadvantages of the motor
2AR-FSE is considered to be a high-tech engine with medium boost, but with good economy. The motor has proven itself to be a reliable and durable unit, if the operating rules are not violated. It is extremely important to observe the service intervals, the timing of the replacement of consumables. Like all Toyota engines, this unit is sensitive to oil quality. When using high-quality fuels and lubricants, this ICE easily nurses more than 400 thousand km. Typical malfunctions are the same as for other Toyota engines:
- knock of phase shifters on a cold engine;
- low timing chain resource;
- leaky pump
- short lived thermostat.
A characteristic feature of this particular engine is the destruction of the thread for the cylinder head bolts. The tightness of the connection between the head and the block is broken. There have been cases of gasket burnout and oil and antifreeze getting into the combustion chamber.
In general, this is a reliable, durable motor that occupies a high step in the hierarchy of engines. The motor is considered disposable due to the thin walls of the cylinders, but some technical centers undertake major repairs. A more rational way out is to purchase a contract engine, since finding it will not be a problem. Prices for such motors, in good condition, start at 80 thousand rubles.
