Toyota 2AR-FXE engine

The 2AR-FE engine debuted on Toyota vehicles in 2008. It was intended to replace the aging 2AZ-FE power unit. At first, the internal combustion engine was installed on the Toyota Camry V-40 for the American market. Gradually, the engine became more widespread. It began to be installed on the RAV4, Highlander, other Toyota and Lexus models.

3 years after the start of production, a derated up to 154 hp appeared. version 2AR-FXE. This modification is intended for installation on a hybrid Toyota Camry, as well as on Lexus sedans with a power plant consisting of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The letter h is present in the designation of such Lexuses. Fundamentally, the motor does not differ from the 2AR-FE. Installed original pistons, the motor runs on the Atkinson cycle. This resulted in an 11% reduction in fuel consumption. The slightly reduced torque and power is compensated by the battery-operated electric motor.

Engine description

When designing the motor, emphasis was placed on manufacturability and efficiency. Structurally, this is an in-line four-cylinder unit with a working volume of 2 cm493, made of aluminum alloy. Thin-walled cast-iron liners are pressed into the cylinder block, the surface of which is treated in such a way that good heat dissipation and a strong connection with the block are ensured.

Improved cooling system, lubrication. An oil pump is installed that provides variable oil pressure depending on the engine operating modes. Timing is driven by a single-row chain with a hydraulic tensioner. A technological hole is provided for access to it.

There are two camshafts in the head of the block, each with phase shifters of the DVVT-i system. The exhaust shaft can rotate 50 degrees, the exhaust shaft can rotate 40 degrees. This provides high torque over a wide rpm range.

Distributed fuel injection is used as a power supply system. The nozzles are equipped with an elongated tip, in which 12 holes are made for better atomization of gasoline. Fuel is injected into the intake manifold along the perimeter of the valves.

Reliability and maintainability

Like all Toyota engines, the 2AR FXE has a reputation for being durable and reliable. It is distinguished by high efficiency, for 9 years now it has been installed on various cars. Disadvantages are traditional for engines of this brand:

  • sensitivity to fuel quality;
  • knocking of VVT-i clutches on a cold engine, treated by replacement;
  • pump leak;
  • in some cases, increased oil consumption at high speeds is noted;
  • relatively short service interval.

Despite the presence of cast iron liners, the cylinder block is considered disposable. Company centers recommend engine replacement. But the resource of this engine is high. There were cases of running up to 700 thousand km without major repairs.

Opportunity to purchase a contract engine

The 2AR FXE has been designed to achieve maximum economy at the expense of power characteristics, as it is installed on Toyota Camry hybrid versions. The lack of power is compensated by the electric motor. Therefore, the offer of contract engines is quite limited, hybrid versions are not very popular. If you spend some time, you can find a decent engine in the range of 70-100 thousand rubles. In extreme cases, it can be replaced with a more affordable ICE 2AR-FE. Such a replacement will require alterations. You will need another electronic engine control unit, wiring modifications, and other work.
