Engine modifications
The engine had 2 generations: a stock version of the 1991 sample and a variation from the 1997 VVT-i. The differences between the versions lie in different environmental standards and the type of fuel used: AI-92 for the 1991 version and AI-95 for the 1997 version. The main difference between the previous version of the JZ engine is the 2JZ-GE's use of the more modern DIS-3 instead of the outdated spark distributor ignition system.
Toyota 2JZ-GE problems
Despite the general soundness of the engine, this engine also has its drawbacks.
At high mileage, the engine starts to consume oil, and there may be the following reasons: stuck rings, or wear of the valve stem seals.
There are also problems that are relevant for other 2JZ engines - after washing the engine, water gets into the wells of the candles, which may prevent the engine from starting.
The variable valve timing system - VVT-i is not very durable, and, most often, it serves no more than 100 - 150 thousand kilometers.
Often there is a decrease in power due to a malfunction of the crankcase valve.
Where is the engine number
The engine number on the 2JZ-GE is located between the power steering and the engine support pad.
Tuning 2JZ-GE
This engine has great potential for tuning. Without losing the resource, the power unit can be modified to a power of 400 horsepower, but the engine's potential is 400+ horsepower.
Tuning involves installing turbochargers, replacing nozzles with more efficient ones, replacing a gas pump (at least 250 liters per hour) and tuning an ECU.
But keep in mind that tuning a naturally aspirated engine is a very expensive pleasure. It is much more expedient to think about swapping to a 2JZ-GTE, that is, to a turbo engine, which will be easier to modify. Full information: tuning 2JZ-GTE.
