Toyota G16E-GTS engine

Engineers of the united GAZOO Racing team of Toyota have designed and put into production a completely new model of the engine. The main difference is the absence of analogues of the developed model.

Description

The G16E-GTS engine has been in production since 2020. It is an in-line three-cylinder gasoline unit with a volume of 1,6 liters. turbocharged, direct fuel injection. Designed for installation on the new generation GR Yaris hatchback, a homologation model capable of taking part in rally championships.

Initially conceived as a high-speed, compact, powerful enough and at the same time light motor. The implementation of the project is based on the knowledge and experience gained in the course of various motorsport competitions.

According to available information, the model in question was created exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. It will be delivered to the European market in a derated version (with a capacity of 261 hp).

The cylinder block and cylinder head are made of aluminum alloy.

Timing chain drive. The mechanism itself is made according to the DOHC scheme, i.e. has two camshafts, four valves per cylinder. The valve timing is controlled by the Dual VVT system. This allowed to significantly improve the performance of the engine, while reducing fuel consumption.

The single-scroll turbocharger with vacuum WGT deserves special attention. The G16E-GTS ICE is equipped with a WGT exhaust gas bypass turbocharger (developed by BorgWarner). It is characterized by a turbine with a variable geometry of the blades, the presence of a vacuum valve for discharging exhaust gases into the atmosphere bypassing the turbine.

Due to the optimization of the turbocharger, the refinement of the turbocharging system as a whole, it was possible to achieve high power and torque in a wide range of operation of a qualitatively new power unit.

Engine operation

Due to the short operation (in time), there are no general statistics on the nuances of work yet. But in discussions at auto forums, the issue of reliability was raised. Opinions were expressed about the possibility of high vibration of a three-cylinder internal combustion engine.

However, the installation of a balance shaft on the power unit is a solution to this problem, the concern's engineers believe.

As practice shows, as a result, not only vibration is reduced, but additional noise disappears, and driving comfort increases.

The tests carried out on the engine confirmed the conformity of the characteristics laid down in it. So, GR Yaris accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 5,5 seconds. At the same time, the power reserve in the engine remains, which is confirmed by the speed limit to 230 km / h.

The high-tech solutions of the Toyota engineering corps made it possible to create an innovative direction in engine building, which resulted in the emergence of a new generation power unit.
