Engineers of the AvtoVAZ concern have designed an injection engine for the domestic Niva SUV.

Description

In 1994, VAZ engine builders presented another development of a new power unit for completing Lada SUVs. The motor was assigned the code VAZ-21214. During the release, the engine was repeatedly upgraded.

VAZ-21214 is a 1,7-liter in-line gasoline four-cylinder unit with a capacity of 81 hp. with and a torque of 127 Nm.

The aging VAZ-21213 engine served as the basis for the development of the engine. The new version of the internal combustion engine received differences in the fuel supply system, timing and exhaust gas purification system.

The cylinder block remained traditionally cast-iron, in-line, not lined. The front cover of the motor has undergone minor changes (the configuration has been changed due to the fastening of the DPKV).

The cylinder head is aluminum, with one camshaft and 8 valves equipped with hydraulic compensators. Now there is no need to manually adjust the thermal clearance of the valves.

There are two types of cylinder head (Russian and Canadian). It must be remembered that they are not interchangeable.

The connecting rod-piston group is similar to the predecessor's SHPG, but has a discrepancy in the number of teeth on the crankshaft pulley and the presence of a damper on it. The operation of the engine has become less noisy, the load from torsional vibrations on the HF has decreased.

The timing drive is a single-row chain. For more stable operation of the hydraulic chain tensioner and hydraulic compensators, it was necessary to reduce the number of teeth on the oil pump drive sprocket. This refinement made it possible to increase the performance of the oil pump.

The intake manifold and fuel rail are identical to these components of the VAZ-21213 engine.

The exhaust manifold is equipped with a catalytic converter.

The ignition module is taken from the VAZ-2112 engine. The operation of the internal combustion engine is controlled by the BOSCH MP 7.9.7 ECU. Depending on the year of manufacture or engine modification, the JANUARY 7.2 ECU may be found.

Modifications of the VAZ-21214 engine had a common structural basis, but had differences in the fuel supply system, environmental standards for the content of harmful substances in the exhaust, and the presence (absence) of power steering.

For example, in the internal combustion engine VAZ-21214-10, the power system had a central fuel injection. Environmental standards - Euro 0. VAZ-21214-41 was equipped with a steel exhaust manifold with a built-in catalyst.

Environmental standards were raised to Euro 4 (used in the domestic market), and up to Euro 5 in export engine options. Also, INA hydraulic lifters were installed on this motor, while domestic YAZTA were used on all other versions.

Modification 21214-33 had a cast iron exhaust manifold, power steering and complied with Euro 3 standards.

The difference between VAZ-21214 and VAZ-21214-30

The differences in the versions of these engines are minor. Firstly, the motor 21214-30 was not equipped with a power steering. Secondly, it had an insignificant difference in power and torque (see table 1). From 2008 to 2019, it was installed on the Lada Niva Pickup of the 2329st generation (VAZ-XNUMX).

Of the design differences, the VAZ-21214-30 package can be noted with the presence of only a welded steel exhaust manifold.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

Among car owners there is a double opinion about the reliability of the engine. Despite different opinions, most motorists consider the VAZ-21214 engine to be quite reliable if it is carefully looked after.

For example, Sergey from Moscow writes: “... when the warranty is over, I will service it myself, because the car is simple in design, and spare parts are on every corner". Oleg from St. Petersburg agrees with him: “... the engine starts in any frost, and the interior warms up very quickly". An interesting review was left by Bahama from Makhachkala: “... mileage 178000 km on various roads, including mountain and field roads. The factory engine was not touched, the clutch disc was native, I changed the gears at the 1st and 2nd gear checkpoints through my own fault (I drove without lubrication, leaked out through the stuffing box)».

Of course, there are also negative reviews. But they mostly concern the car. There is only one general negative review about the engine - its power is not satisfied, it is rather weak.

The general conclusion can be drawn as follows - the engine is reliable with timely and high-quality service, but requires constant monitoring of the technical condition.

Weak spots

There are weak points in the motor. A lot of trouble causes oil seepage through the exhaust manifold studs. There have been many cases of heavy smoke in the engine compartment with burning oil that has fallen on the hot manifold. Manufacturer's advice - fix the problem yourself or at a car service.

Weak electrical. As a result, failures in the engine idling are possible. In most cases, the problem lies in a malfunction of the idle sensor, spark plugs or high-voltage wires (insulation damage). Overheating of the ignition module causes the failure of the first and second cylinders.

As a result of the formation of oil deposits on the valves and cylinder walls, over time, an oil burner appears in the motor.

The engine is quite noisy in operation. The reason lies in the hydraulic compensators, the water pump, the output that has appeared on the camshaft. Worse, if the noise is caused by main or connecting rod bearings.

In the event of increased noise, the internal combustion engine needs to be diagnosed at a specialized car service.

Rarely, but there is overheating of the engine. The sources of this problem are a faulty thermostat or a dirty radiator in the cooling system.

Maintainability

The indisputable advantage of the VAZ-21214 engine is its high maintainability. The unit is capable of withstanding several major overhauls of a full scope. The motor can be restored in garage conditions due to its simple design.

There are no problems with finding spare parts for repairs. They can be purchased at any specialized store. The only caveat is to avoid unfamiliar sellers, as there is a very high probability of purchasing counterfeit products. Especially in the manufacture of counterfeit products, China has succeeded.

In case of emergency, a motor at a loyal price can be easily purchased on the secondary market.

In general, the VAZ-21214 power unit deserves a good rating with careful care for it.
