In the first half of the 90s, VAZ engine builders created another power unit, intended for heavy domestic SUVs.
Description
The VAZ-2130 engine was created and put into production in 1993. For off-road vehicles designed and coming off the VAZ assembly line with a powerful load-bearing body, a new, more powerful engine was required. The engineers of the concern solved this problem in a peculiar way.
The well-known VAZ-21213 was taken as the basis of the new unit. Its cylinder block was completely suitable without any alterations, and the cylinder head was borrowed from the VAZ-21011. Step milling of the combustion chamber made it possible to increase its volume to 34,5 cm³. Such a symbiosis of the block and cylinder head of different engine models turned out to be viable and progressive.
VAZ-2130 is a four-cylinder in-line gasoline aspirated engine with a volume of 1,8 liters and a capacity of 82 hp. with and a torque of 139 Nm.
Installed on cars of the automaker:
- Lada Niva Pickup (1995-2019);
- 2120 Hope (1998-2002);
- Lada 2120 /restyling/ (2002-2006).
In addition to the listed VAZ-2130, you can find under the hood Lada 2129 Kedr, 2131SP (ambulance), 213102 (collector armored car), 1922-50 (snow and swamp vehicle), 2123 (Chevy Niva) and other Lada models.
Initially, the engine was produced with a carburetor power system, but later it received a distributed fuel injection controlled by an ECU (injector).
Crankshaft steel, forged. The crank radius has been increased to 41,9mm, resulting in a piston stroke of 84mm.
The pistons are standard, aluminum, with three rings, two of which are compression and one oil scraper.
Timing chain drive. The chain is double stranded. Each cylinder has two valves (SOHC). Distributor one. Hydraulic compensators are not provided, so the thermal clearance of the valves has to be adjusted manually every 7-10 thousand kilometers. The chain is recommended to be replaced after 80 thousand kilometers. Its stretching causes the valves to bend.
Carburetor power system (Solex carburetor). The injector has a Bosch MP 7.0 controller. The use of an injector made it possible to increase engine power and reduce the concentration of harmful compounds in the exhaust to Euro 2 standards, then to Euro 3.
The ignition system is non-contact. Used spark plugs A17DVR, BP6ES(NGK).
The lubrication system is combined - under pressure and splashing.
Innovative solutions used in the design of the unit made it possible not only to increase its power, but also to improve the throttle response.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability
Reliability
The VAZ-2130 engine, developed by VAZ designers, is popular among car owners primarily due to its reliability and ease of maintenance.
Despite the fact that the manufacturer determined the engine to have a rather low service life, with timely maintenance by high-quality consumables, the engine takes care of more than 150 thousand km without voltage.
Additionally, gentle operation can further increase the resource by 50-70 thousand km.
Thus, there is no doubt about the reliability of the engine, if you provide it with proper care.
Weak spots
Weaknesses include the tendency of internal combustion engines to overheat. The most common cause is clogged radiator cells. It will not be superfluous in this case to check the operation of the thermostat and the water pump.
High oil consumption. The manufacturer set the standard at 700 gr. for a thousand km. In practice, this limit is often exceeded. A consumption of more than 1 liter per thousand indicates an oil burn that has arisen - diagnostics are required at the service station.
The low resource of the timing drive has already been mentioned. The danger of chain stretching lies not only in the bending of the valves, but also in the destruction of the pistons.

Another serious flaw is premature wear of the camshaft.
For the motor, a characteristic feature is the increased noise of its operation.
Despite the existing weaknesses and low mileage, the VAZ-2130 ICE can serve for a long time. To do this, you just need to organize the proper care of the engine.
Maintainability
All car owners note the high maintainability of the motor. You can restore its performance even in garage conditions.
Finding spare parts is not difficult. They are available in sufficient quantity and assortment in any specialized store.
The only trouble that can happen when choosing parts for repair is the possibility of running into a fake. The market is literally flooded with counterfeit products, especially from China.
Before a major overhaul of the engine in full, you should consider purchasing a contract ICE. There are no problems finding it.
Despite the low mileage, the VAZ-2130 engine showed good operational results and high maintainability. The reliability of the motor is beyond doubt, since it is possible to increase the mileage and modernization (tuning).
