At the Barnaultransmash plant, AvtoVAZ R&D Center engineers have developed another diesel unit for passenger cars. The previously created VAZ-341 was taken as the basis.
Description
The manufactured VAZ-341 diesel engine did not satisfy the consumer with its power characteristics, although it was generally considered good and reliable.
Newly created car models required more powerful, high-torque and economical engines, especially SUVs. To equip them, a motor was created, which received the VAZ-343 index. By 2005, it was planned to launch it into mass production.
When developing the unit, engineers almost completely copied the existing VAZ-341. To increase the volume, and hence the power, it was decided to increase the cylinder diameter from 76 to 82 mm.
The calculated result was achieved - the power increased by 10 liters. With.
VAZ-343 is a four-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of 1,8 liters and a capacity of 63 hp. with and a torque of 114 Nm.
Designed for installation on the station wagon VAZ 21048.
The advantages of the engine were as follows:
- Fuel consumption. In comparison with gasoline engines with the same characteristics, it was much lower. During the tests did not exceed six liters per 100 km.
- Resource before overhaul. Considering the increased strength of engine parts and assemblies, the VAZ-343 actually exceeded the one declared by the manufacturer by 1,5-2 times. In addition, car owners of such an internal combustion engine were engaged in its repair much less frequently.
- High torque. Thanks to him, the engine traction made it possible to drive comfortably both on good roads and off-road conditions. In this case, the workload of the car did not play any role.
- Starting the engine at low temperatures. VAZ-343 started confidently at -25˚ C.
Unfortunately, despite such weighty advantages, there was no serial production of internal combustion engines. There are many reasons for this, but two main ones can be distinguished - insufficient funding from the government and design flaws, which, again, need money to eliminate.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability
Reliability
VAZ-343 proved to be a reliable and economical unit. But this conclusion was made based on the results of testing, since the engine was not launched into mass production.
Weak spots
They are identical to the weak points of the base model - VAZ-341. The issues of eliminating vibration, excessive noise and increasing the level of exhaust purification to European standards remained unresolved.
Maintainability
There is no information about maintainability. Based on the fact that, in comparison with the VAZ-341, the difference is only in the diameter of the cylinder, the search for parts for the CPG will become difficult.
