Volkswagen BTS engine

The engine builders of the Volkswagen auto concern designed the power unit of the EA111-1,6 line with a new cylinder block. The internal combustion engine has other significant differences from its predecessors.

Description

Engineers of the VAG concern have developed and put into production a new engine, which received the BTS code.

Since May 2006, the production of the motor has been established at the company's plant in Chemnitz (Germany). The internal combustion engine was intended to complete popular models of its own production.

The engine was produced until April 2010, after which it was replaced by a more progressive CFNA unit.

BTS is a 1,6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 105 hp. with and a torque of 153 Nm with an in-line arrangement of cylinders.

Installed on cars of the VAG automaker:

  • Volkswagen Polo IV /9N3/ (2006-2009);
  • Cross Polo (2006-2008);
  • Polo IV /9N4/ (2007-2010);
  • Seat Ibiza III /9N/ (2006-2008);
  • Ibiza IV /6J/ (2008-2010);
  • Cordoba II /6L/ (2006-2008);
  • Skoda Fabia II /5J/ (2007-2010);
  • Fabia II /5J/ combi (2007-2010);
  • Roomster /5J/ (2006-2010).

The cylinder block is made of high strength aluminum alloy. Thin-walled cast-iron sleeves are poured into the body. The main bearings are not interchangeable.

Lightweight aluminum pistons. They have three rings, two upper compression, lower oil scraper (consists of three parts). Anti-friction coating is applied to the piston skirts.

Connecting rods are steel, forged, I-section.

The crankshaft is fixed on five bearings, equipped with eight counterweights.

The cylinder head is aluminum, with two camshafts and 16 valves. Manual adjustment of their thermal gap is not required, since it is carried out automatically by hydraulic compensators. A valve timing regulator (phase shifter) is mounted on the intake camshaft.

Timing chain drive. The chain is lamellar, multi-row.

Timing chain drive VW BTS

Its resource is close to 200 thousand km, but experienced motorists note that by 90 thousand km it begins to stretch and may require replacement. A significant drawback of the drive is the absence of a pusher (plunger) blocking mechanism. Often, such a flaw leads to bending of the valves when the chain jumps.

Fuel supply system - injector, distributed injection. The system is controlled by the Bosch Motronic ME 7.5.20 ECU. Recommended gasoline is AI-98, but AI-95 is allowed as a substitute.

Combined lubrication system. The oil pump with internal trochoidal gearing is driven by the crankshaft toe. The oil used must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and meet the requirements of VW 501 01, VW 502 00, VW 503 00 or 504 00 class ACEA A2 or A3, viscosity class SAE 5W-40, 5W-30.

The engine uses four ignition coils.

According to numerous reviews of car owners and car service workers, the VW BTS turned out to be very successful.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

The VW BTS engine turned out to be not only successful, but also reliable. Timely, high-quality service and proper care contribute to long-term operation.

Many car owners, when discussing the unit on the forums, note the reliability of its operation. For example, Pensioner shares his observations: “... I have the same apparatus and there are already 100140 km on the speedometer. So far I haven't changed anything on the engine.". According to numerous information from motorists, the real resource of the motor often exceeds 400 thousand km.

An important factor in the reliability of any motor is its margin of safety. Despite the aluminum cylinder block, boosting the BTS is possible. The unit, without any changes, easily withstands an increase in power up to 115 hp. With. To do this, it is enough to flash the ECU.

If you tune the engine at a deeper level, then the power will increase. For example, replacing the exhaust manifold with a 4-2-1 will add another dozen hp. with etc.

With all this, it must be remembered that any intervention in the design of the motor significantly worsens a number of its technical characteristics. First of all, the mileage resource, environmental emission standards, etc. are noticeably reduced.

Despite the high reliability, the engine, unfortunately, is not without flaws.

Weak spots

BTS is an engine with virtually no weak points. This does not mean that there are no malfunctions in it. They do occur, but they are not widespread.

Most of the trouble is caused by floating engine speeds. The reason for this phenomenon lies in the clogged USR valve and (or) the throttle assembly. The use of low-quality gasoline contributes to the formation of soot. Flushing the valve and throttle solves the problem with unstable speed.

Sometimes car owners complain about increased oil consumption. The revision of the valve stem seals and the condition of the piston rings allows you to fix the problem. As a rule, natural wear and tear is the first culprit for the failure of these parts.

The remaining faults are not critical and it makes no sense to focus on them.

Thus, the only weak point of the engine is its sensitivity to low-quality gasoline.

Maintainability

Repair of VW BTS is recommended to be carried out in a car service. It is necessary to take into account the high manufacturability of the motor when it is assembled at the factory. In garage conditions, the quality of restoration is simply impossible to achieve.

Of course, simple faults can be fixed on your own. But this will require an ideal knowledge of the technological process of restoration work, the design of the engine and the availability of special tools and devices. And of course original spare parts.

Car owners note the high cost of restoring the motor, especially original components and parts. Some Kulibins are trying to save their budget by purchasing analogues or parts from other engine models.

For example, on one of the forums, advice flashed: “... when replacing the timing chain, I was looking for bypass and tension rollers. Nowhere. Replaced with rollers from Niva Chevrolet from INA. Fit perfectly».

There was no record of how many they went out. Using analogues or substitutes, you need to be ready for a new repair, and in the near future.

Major repairs are expensive. Take, for example, the repair of a cylinder block. During the overhaul, re-sleeve is carried out (removal of the old sleeve, pressing a new one and its machining). The work is complex and requires highly qualified performers. And of course special equipment.

There is a message on the Internet where the repair of the Skoda Roomster internal combustion engine amounted to 102 rubles. And this is without replacing the main components - the cylinder block, pistons, camshafts and crankshaft.

Before you start repairing the unit, you should consider purchasing a contract engine. The price of such a motor starts from 55 thousand rubles.

The Volkswagen BTS engine is a reliable and economical engine. With the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants and timely maintenance, it is also durable.
