German engine builders took into account the shortcomings of the created CJZA engine and, on its basis, created an improved version of a reduced power engine. Like its counterpart, the Volkswagen CJZB engine belongs to the EA211-TSI ICE line (CJZA, CHPA, CZCA, CXSA, CZDA, DJKA).
Description
The unit was produced at the plants of the Volkswagen concern (VAG) from 2012 to 2018. The main purpose is to equip the increasingly popular models of the "B" and "C" segments of our own production.
The internal combustion engine has good external speed characteristics, economy and ease of maintenance.
The CJZB engine is a 1,2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit with a torque of 160 Nm.
It was put on the following models of the VAG automaker:
- Volkswagen Golf VII /5G_/ (2012-2017);
- Seat Leon III /5F_/ (2012-2018);
- Skoda Octavia III /5E_/ (2012-2018).
The engine is noticeably better than its predecessors, especially the EA111-TSI line. First of all, the cylinder head was replaced with a 16-valve. Structurally, it is deployed 180˚, the exhaust manifold is located at the rear.
Two camshafts are located on top, a valve timing regulator is installed on the intake. The valves are equipped with hydraulic compensators. With them, manual adjustment of the thermal gap has gone down in history.
The timing drive uses a belt. The declared resource is 210-240 thousand km. In our operating conditions, it is recommended to check its condition every 30 thousand km, and replace it after 90.
Supercharging is carried out by a turbine with a pressure of 0,7 bar.
The unit uses a dual-circuit cooling system. This solution saved the engine from a long warm-up. The water pump and two thermostats are mounted in one common block (module).
The CJZB is controlled by the Bosch Motronic MED 17.5.21 ECU.
Received a change in the layout of the motor. Now it is installed with a tilt of 12˚ back.

Reliability
Compared to its predecessors, CJZB has become much more reliable. Innovative technologies in design and assembly have played a positive role. Practice confirms that even today these motors do their job properly. You can often find engines with a mileage that is twice the declared resource.
Car owners on the forums note the quality factor of the unit. So, Sergey from Ufa says: “... the motor is excellent, no stocks were noticed. There are some problems with the lambda probe, it often fails and an increased consumption begins. And so, in general, it is quite economical and reliable. Many complain that the 1.2-liter engine is too weak. I would not say so - dynamics and speed are enough. Consumables are inexpensive, suitable from other representatives of VAG».
Regarding the dynamics and speed, CarMax from Moscow adds: “... I rode a brand new Golf with such an engine, though on the mechanics. Enough for "non-racing" driving. On the highway I drove 150-170 km / h».
The engine has a large margin of safety. Deep tuning will give the engine more than 120 hp. s, but it makes no sense to get involved in such an alteration. First, the CJZB has enough power for its intended use. Secondly, any intervention in the design of the motor will cause a deterioration in its performance (reduced resource, exhaust cleaning, etc.).

Weak spots
Turbine drive. Wastegate actuator rod often sours, jams and breaks. The use of heat-resistant lubricants and ensuring constant operation of the traction helps to extend the performance of the drive, i.e., even while in traffic jams, it is necessary to periodically accelerate the engine to increased speeds (short-term regassing).
Increased oil consumption. Especially this shortcoming is marked by the first versions of the motor. Here the fault lies with the manufacturer - the technological process of manufacturing the cylinder head is violated. The defect was later corrected.
The formation of soot on the valves. To a greater extent, the occurrence of this phenomenon is facilitated by low-quality fuels and lubricants or the use of gasoline with a low octane number.
Bent valves when the timing belt breaks. Timely monitoring of the condition of the belt and replacement before the recommended period will help to avoid this trouble.
Coolant leak from under the seal of the pump module and thermostats. Contact of the seal with fuel is unacceptable. Keeping the engine clean is a guarantee of no coolant leakage.
The rest of the weaknesses are not critical, since they do not have a mass character.
Maintainability
The engine has good maintainability. This is facilitated by the modular design of the unit.
Finding parts is no problem. They are always available in any specialized store. For repairs, only original components and parts are used.
When restoring, it is necessary to know the technology of restoration work well. For example, the design of the engine does not provide for the removal of the crankshaft. It is clear that its root bearings cannot be replaced either. If necessary, you have to change the cylinder block assembly. It is not possible to separately replace the water pump of the cooling system or thermostats.
This design feature facilitates the repair of internal combustion engines, but at the same time makes it expensive.
Often, the purchase of a contract engine becomes the most rational option. The cost depends on many factors and starts from 80 thousand rubles.
The Volkswagen CJZB engine is reliable and durable only with timely and high-quality service. Compliance with the terms of the next maintenance, reasonable operation, refueling with proven gasoline and oil will extend the overhaul life more than twice.
