Volkswagen CZTA engine

This power unit was created specifically for the American market. The basis for the development was the CZDA engine, well known to Russian motorists.

Description

The EA211-TSI line (CHPA, CMBA, CXCA, CZCA, CZEA, CZDA, CZDB, CZDD, DJKA) has been replenished with another motor, called CZTA. Its production began in 2014 and continued for four years, until 2018. The release was carried out at the car plant in Mlada Boleslav (Czech Republic).

The main changes were made in the cooling systems, the intake tract for the formation of the working mixture and the exhaust gases. The improvements have led to a reduction in the overall weight of the engine and economical fuel consumption.

When designing the internal combustion engine, all the existing shortcomings of previously produced engines of the same type were taken into account. Many were successfully eliminated, but some remained (we will talk about them a little later).

Volkswagen CZTA engine

The overall design concept remains the same - modular design.

CZTA is a 1,4-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline unit with a capacity of 150 hp. with and a torque of 250 Nm equipped with a turbocharger.

The engine was installed on the VW Jetta VI 1.4 TSI "NA", delivered to North America since August 2014. In addition, it is suitable for equipping a number of other Volkswagen models - Passat, Tiguan, Golf.

Like its counterpart, the CZTA has an aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners. Lightweight crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods.

Aluminum cylinder head, with 16 valves equipped with hydraulic compensators. A bed for two camshafts is attached to the top of the head, on which the valve timing regulators are mounted. Feature - the cylinder head is deployed 180˚. Therefore, the exhaust manifold is at the rear.

Supercharging is carried out by an IHI RHF3 turbine with an overpressure of 1,2 bar. The turbocharging system is paired with an intercooler installed in the intake manifold. The resource of the turbine is 120 thousand km, with adequate maintenance and measured operation of the motor, it takes care of up to 200 thousand km.

Timing belt drive. The manufacturer stated a mileage of 120 thousand km, but in our conditions it is recommended to change the belt earlier, after about 90 thousand km. At the same time, every 30 thousand km, it is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the belt, since in the event of a break, the valves are deformed.

Fuel system - injector, distributed injection. AI-98 gasoline is used.

The engine is highly sensitive to fuel quality. The design of the internal combustion engine allows the installation of 4th generation HBO, for example, KME NEVO SKY with a KME Silver gearbox and Barracuda injectors.

The lubrication system uses oil 0W-30 with approval and specification VW 502 00 / 505 00. In addition to lubrication, oil nozzles cool the piston crowns.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

The reliability of CZTA is beyond doubt. Confirmation of this is the resource of the engine. The manufacturer declared up to 300 thousand km, but in practice it is much higher. The only condition is the use of high-quality fuel and lubricants and timely service.

The unit has a high margin of safety. A simple chip tuning with Stage1 firmware increases power to 175 hp. With. The torque also increases (290 Nm). The design of the engine allows you to increase power further, but you should not get carried away with this.

Excessive forcing causes increased wear of motor parts, which leads to a decrease in resource and fault tolerance. Additionally, the characteristics of the internal combustion engine do not change for the better.

Reliability is enhanced by the possibility of replacing parts from other engines of the same type, such as CZCA or CZDA.

Kein94 from Brest informs that when trying to replace the lambda probe, he ran into a problem with his choice. The original (04E 906 262 EE) costs 370 bel. rubles (154 c.u.), and another, also VAGovsky (04E 906 262 AR) - 68 Bel. rubles (28 c.u.). The choice fell on the latter. The result is reduced gas mileage and the error icon on the dashboard went out.

Weak spots

The weakest point is the turbine drive. From prolonged parking or driving at constant speeds, the wastegate actuator rod is coked, and then the wastegate actuator is broken.

Volkswagen CZTA engine

The malfunction occurs due to an error in engineering calculations when designing an internal combustion engine.

The weak node is the pump-thermostat module in the cooling system. These elements are mounted in a common block. In the event of failure of any of them, the entire module must be replaced.

Loss of engine thrust. It is usually the result of a jammed actuator rod. A more specific reason can be found out when diagnosing an engine at a service station.

Bent valves when the timing belt breaks. Timely inspection of the belt will prevent the occurrence of a malfunction.

Sensitivity to fuel. When using low-quality gasoline and oil, coking of the oil receiver and valves occurs. The malfunction is caused by an oil burner.

Maintainability

CZTA is characterized by high maintainability. First of all, this is facilitated by the modular design of the unit. Replacing a faulty block in the motor is not difficult. But here it must be borne in mind that in garage conditions this is not easy to do.

Volkswagen CZTA engine

There is no problem finding the parts you need for repairs. Despite the fact that this engine has not found wide distribution in our country (it was manufactured for the USA), components and parts for its restoration are available in almost every specialized store.

Given the high cost of spare parts and the repair itself, you can use an alternative option - to purchase a contract engine. In this case, you need to be prepared to pay about 150 thousand rubles for the purchase.

Depending on the configuration of the motor with attachments and other factors, you can find an internal combustion engine cheaper.
