Volvo B4184S11 engine

The B4184S11 engine has become a new model of the 11th series of Swedish engine builders. The traditional imitation of models of motors previously mastered by the production made it possible to preserve and increase all the positive qualities of the novelty.

Description

The engine was produced at the factory in Skövde, Sweden from 2004 to 2009. Installed on cars:

Hatchback 3 door (10.2006 – 09.2009)
Volvo C30 1st generation
sedan (06.2004 - 03.2007)
Volvo S40 2nd generation (MS)
Universal (12.2003 - 03.2007)
Volvo V50 1st generation

The motor in the early 2000s was developed by the Japanese concern Mazda. The largest shareholder of Mazda was American Ford. Volvo Cars, which also deals with engine building, was a subsidiary of Ford. So Mazda's L8 series engines appeared at Volvo. They were given the brand B4184S11.

In other words, the American Duratec HE, the Japanese Mazda MZR-L8 and the Swedish B4184S11 are virtually the same engine.

According to the accepted classification of the company, the engine brand is deciphered as follows:

  • B - gasoline;
  • 4 - number of cylinders;
  • 18 - working volume;
  • 4 - the number of valves per cylinder;
  • S - atmospheric;
  • 11 – generation (version).

Thus, the engine in question is a 1,8-liter gasoline four-cylinder aspirated.

The cylinder block and cylinder head are aluminum. Cast iron sleeves.

Pistons are standard aluminum. They have three rings (two compression and one oil scraper).

Two camshafts are installed on the cylinder head. Their drive is chain.

The valves in the head are V-shaped. There are no hydraulic lifters. Adjustment of working gaps is carried out by selection of pushers.

Sealed type cooling system. The water pump and generator are belt driven.

Oil pump drive - chain. Oil nozzles lubricate the bottom of the pistons. Camshaft cams, valves are lubricated by spraying.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

The B4184S11 internal combustion engine is a reliable and resourceful power unit. Here, the starting point of this judgment is the timing chain drive. Volume is of no small importance. This is true, if you do not take into account the life of the chain itself. And it is limited to about 200 thousand kilometers. At the same time, deviations in the timing of the next maintenance or replacing the oil recommended by the manufacturer with another will significantly reduce its service life.

Conclusion: the engine is reliable, but subject to all the manufacturer's recommendations for its operation. A vivid confirmation of the above is the car's mileage of more than 500 thousand km without engine CR. Most motorists note that the engines work like new, do not have increased oil consumption, although the mark on the speedometer has exceeded 250 thousand km.

Weak spots

Unfortunately, they also exist. The most noticeable weak point is the floating idle speed. But, again, many drivers (and car service mechanics) come to the conclusion that the main reason for this behavior of the motor is its untimely and poor quality maintenance. Here and a rare replacement of spark plugs, an air filter, untimely cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system and other "liberties" during maintenance. The result of such an attitude will not be long in coming - the throttle valves become dirty. And this is already poor ignition of the fuel at low speeds and the appearance of unnecessary noise in the engine.

In addition, weak points include oil leakage from the heat exchanger under the filter, often broken intake dampers, destruction of plastic and various rubber seals. There is a jamming of the thermostat in the closed position, and this is already a path to overheating of the engine.

Maintainability

The maintainability of the motor has its own specific features. Taking into account the metal sleeves in the block, it can be assumed that their boring or replacement during a major overhaul will not cause any difficulties. Partly it is.

The problem is that oversized pistons are not produced separately by Volvo Cars as spare parts. The concept of the manufacturer is the impossibility (prohibition) of replacing the piston group with parts. For overhaul, cylinder blocks are supplied complete with crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods.

Despite these limitations, a way out of this situation has been found. Mazda manufactures and supplies all parts necessary for overhaul separately. In other words, there are no Volvo engine repair kits, but they are available for Mazda. Since in this case we are talking about the same power unit, the problem is considered solved.

Replacing the remaining components and parts does not cause difficulties in their search and installation.

It is proposed to watch a video about engine repair.

Working fluids and engine oil

The engine lubrication system uses 5W-30 viscosity oil according to SAE classification. Recommended by the manufacturer - Volvo WSS-M2C 913-B or ACEA A1 / B1. The specific brand of oil specifically for your car is indicated in the Instructions for Use.

Volvo coolant is used to cool the engine. It is recommended to fill in the power steering with Volvo WSS-M2C 204-A transmission fluid.

The Volvo B4184S11 engine is a reliable and durable power unit with a long service life if it is properly operated and serviced in a timely manner.
