German cars BMW 3-series belong to the middle class. Their production began in 1975, today they are represented by a large selection of bodies and engines, there are also sports versions. This series has become the most successful in the history of the automaker.

  • The first generation car was introduced in 1975 - a two-door sedan with a four-cylinder engine. In 1977, a model with a six-cylinder engine was released.
  • In 1982, the second generation went into the series with improved aerodynamics, a redesigned appearance and powerful engines. In 1983, the production of a four-door sedan was launched, and since 1985 a convertible and a sports version of the M3 have been produced. The first station wagon began to be produced in 1987. After that, versions with diesel engines appeared.
  • The third generation appeared in 1990 in the form of a four-door sedan, since 1992 they launched a coupe, a few months later a sports version and a convertible. Since 1994, a compact hatchback has been produced. This series included powerful six-cylinder gasoline engines. They were equipped with two overhead camshafts and included four valves per cylinder, VANOS proprietary development was used - a variable valve timing system. There were also economical six- and four-cylinder turbodiesels.
  • The fourth generation was demonstrated in 1998. Cars have become bigger and more powerful. They were the first to use diesel engines with a battery fuel supply system and direct injection. They were even installed on coupes and convertibles.
  • The fifth generation began to be produced in 2005. They were distinguished by powerful internal combustion engines and high controllability. Gasoline engines were equipped with direct fuel injection systems, and the most powerful power units were turbocharged. All diesel engines were distinguished by efficiency and compliance with toxicity requirements. On some models, Start-Stop systems were installed.
  • In 2012, the sixth generation launched - a coupe with two and four doors and a convertible. They had an automatic eight-speed transmission, as well as a projector on the windshield. Gasoline, diesel engines and hybrids were offered.
  • In 2018, the seventh series of sedans entered the market.
  • Since 2013, the 3-Series Gran Turismo has been added to the series.

Special sports versions took part in various competitions and often won prizes. The engines of these models had certain improvements.

Despite all its advantages, endurance and quality, power units for the BMW 3 series had their own drawbacks. The most common problems were that only the original oil of the automaker had to be poured into the engines. Otherwise, it instantly coked, after which Valvetronic, Vanos and hydraulic lifters failed. The reliability of the fuel injection system has been increased, but quite a few problems remain. Sometimes you have to change the fuel pump and injectors less than 100 thousand kilometers. Oil can escape through the crankcase ventilation valve. In 2010 engines, a low pressure valve failure was a common problem. A pair of turbines, an ignition coil, a counter and an electric pump do not have the greatest resource. In 2,5 liter engines, the piston rings are thin.
