BMW 3 series engines in F30, G20 bodies

BMW 3 combines many generations of cars belonging to the middle class. The first "troika" rolled off the assembly line in 1975. For the BMW 3, there were many body variations and a variety of engines. In addition, there are special "charged" modifications for sports driving. This is the most successful series of cars from the manufacturer. Today I want to touch on two generations of these cars:

  • sixth generation (F30) (2012-2019);
  • seventh generation (G20) (2019-present).

F30

This model replaced the previous E90. It was shown by the company for the first time on October 14, 2011 at an event in Munich. Sales of this sedan started almost five months later (February 11, 2012). The F30 has become slightly longer than its predecessor (by 93 mm), wider (by 6 mm in the body and 42 mm with mirrors) and taller (by 8 mm). The wheelbase has also grown (by 50 mm). Also, the engineers were able to increase the usable trunk space (by 50 liters) and reduce the overall weight of the car. But the changes also increased the cost, in Germany the new "troika" cost about a thousand euros more than the E90 at one time.

On this generation, all “aspirated” were removed, only turbocharged engines were offered. There were eight petrol ICEs and two "diesels".

Versions F30

During the existence of this model, the manufacturer offered several versions:

  • F30 - the first variation in the series, which is a four-door sedan, it was sold from the start of sales;
  • F31 - station wagon model, hit the market in May 2012;
  • F34 - Gran Turismo, a special version with a signature sloping roof, this is a kind of fusion of classic sedan and station wagon, entered the GT market in March 2013;
  • F35 - an extended version of the car, sold since July 2012, sold only in China;
  • F32, F33, F36 are versions that were combined almost immediately into the specially created BMW 4 series. F32 is a classic coupe, F33 is a stylish convertible, F36 is a four-door coupe.

316i, 320i Efficient Dynamics и 316d

For these machines, one TwinPower-Turbo N13B16 engine was offered with four cylinders in a row and a displacement of 1,6 liters. On the 316i it put out 136 horses, and on the 320i it put out a respectable 170 horses. It is noteworthy that on a weaker engine, the consumption according to the documents was about 6 liters per 100 kilometers traveled, and on a 170-horsepower internal combustion engine, 0,5 liters less.

The diesel two-liter R4 N47D20 turbo on this car was tuned for 116 hp, fuel consumption of about 4 liters per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle.

318i, 318d

A 1,5-liter TwinPower-Turbo B38B15 was installed here, developing 136 hp. This "baby" consumed about 5,5 liters / 100 km.

The diesel R4 N47D20 turbo on this car was tuned for 143 horses, it consumed 4,5 liters / 100 km according to the passport.

320i, 320d Efficient Dynamics и 320d (328d США)

The motor for this car was first labeled as TwinPower-Turbo R4 N20B20, and then it was reconfigured and called the B48B20. The working volume is 2,0 liters with a power of 184 horsepower. Consumption in mixed driving mode is about 6 liters for the N20B20 and about 5,5 liters for the B48B20. The change in the marking of the motor was due to new environmental requirements.

The diesel R4 N47D20 turbo on this 320d produced 163 "mare (consumption of about 4 liters / 100 km), and on the 320d (328d USA) the power reached already 184 horsepower (passport consumption did not exceed 5 liters per 100 km).

325d

A "diesel" N47D20 with two-stage turbochargers was installed here. This made it possible to remove 184 horsepower from this engine with two liters of volume. The declared consumption also did not exceed 5 liters of diesel fuel for every 100 kilometers.

328

The car was equipped with a TwinPower-Turbo R4 N20B20 engine, its power reached 245 “mares”, and the working volume was 2 liters. The declared consumption is about 6,5 liters per "hundred". About the diesel 328d for the US market, it was just said, a little higher.

330i, 330d

Under the hood, this car had a TwinPower-Turbo R4 B48B20 blown up to 252 horsepower. Its working volume was 2 liters. According to the promises to the manufacturers, this engine was supposed to consume approximately 6,5 liters of gasoline for every "hundred" in the combined cycle.

In the diesel version, there was an N57D30 R6 turbo under the hood, with a volume of 3 liters, it could develop up to 258 hp, but at the same time its consumption, which was indicated in the passport, barely exceeded 5 liters.

335i, 335d

This model was equipped with a gasoline TwinPower-Turbo R6 N55B30 with a displacement of 3 liters, which could produce a solid 306 horsepower. The declared consumption of this engine is 8 liters of gasoline / 100 km.

In the diesel 335, the same N57D30 R6 was offered as a power unit, but with two turbochargers installed in series. This made it possible to increase the capacity to 313 "mares". Consumption, according to the manufacturer, was around the mark of 5,5 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km of travel. This is the most powerful "three" F30 with a diesel engine.

340

A modified TwinPower-Turbo R6 was installed here, which was labeled B58B30, with the same volume of 3 liters, an even more impressive 326 “horses” were removed from this engine, while the engineers assured that fuel consumption on this version of the internal combustion engine would drop to 7,5 liters. This is the most powerful offering in the F30 series.

G20

This is the seventh generation of the "troika", which entered the market in 2019. In addition to the classic version of the G20 sedan, there is an exclusive extended G28, which is only available in the Chinese market. There is also information that the G21 station wagon will be released a little later.

G20

So far, this car is equipped with only two motors. The first of these is the diesel B47D20, its working volume is two liters, and it is capable of delivering up to 190 hp. A more powerful engine is the gasoline B48B20, which, with the same 2 liters of working volume, is capable of a power equivalent to 258 “mares”.

Reliability and choice of motor

It is impossible to single out any one motor from the variety described above. All engines from a German manufacturer are quite reliable and with an impressive resource, but only if the internal combustion engine is properly and timely serviced.

Many motorists say that most BMW owners often visit car services due to powertrain malfunctions. There is only one reason for this - this is untimely or incorrect maintenance of this node. It is impossible to save money and perform maintenance or minor repairs of the motor in semi-legal garage services. Noble Bavarian cars do not forgive this.

There is also an opinion that European diesel engines do not like our low-quality “solarium”, for this reason it is worth choosing a gas station for your BMW carefully, repairing the fuel system can become many times more expensive than overpaying a few tens of kopecks per liter of really good diesel fuel.
