Engine MEMZ 301 and 307

The weakest engine that was installed on the Sens was the MEMZ 301. This is the Slavutovsky engine, which was originally created for a budget Ukrainian car. It is believed that this engine was developed jointly by Ukrainian and Korean specialists; it received a Solex carburetor and a 5-speed manual gearbox. They produced cars with these engines in the period from 2000 to 2001.

In the same 2001, they decided to get rid of the outdated carburetor fuel supply system and installed an injector. The engine was named MEMZ-307, its volume remained the same - 1.3 liters, but the power increased to 70 hp. That is, MeMZ-307 uses distributed fuel injection, there is fuel supply and ignition timing control. The engine runs on gasoline with an octane rating of 95 or higher.

The motor lubrication system is combined. Camshaft and crankshaft bearings, rocker arms are lubricated under pressure.

For normal operation of the unit, it requires 3.45 liters of oil, for the gearbox - 2.45 liters. For the motor, the manufacturer recommends using oil with a viscosity of 20W40, 15W40, 10W40, 5W40.

Problems

The owners of the Chevrolet Lanos based on the MeMZ 301 and 307 engines speak well of them. Like any motors of Ukrainian or Russian assembly, these motors can be defective, but the percentage of defects is small. Common problems with these units include:

  • Leaking crankshaft and camshaft oil seals.
  • Incorrect installation of piston rings is rare, which is fraught with oil entering the combustion chambers. This affects 2-3% of engines produced.
  • On a cold engine, vibrations can transfer to the body, and at high speeds it makes a lot of noise. A similar problem occurs only on the "Sens".

Memz 301 and 307 engines are reliable "workhorses" that are well known to all domestic (and not only) craftsmen, so repairs at service stations are cheap. With timely maintenance and the use of high-quality fuel and oil, these engines run 300+ thousand kilometers.

According to user reviews on the forums, there have been cases of a run of 600 thousand kilometers, however, with the replacement of oil scraper rings and cylinder bores. Without a major overhaul, such a mileage is impossible.

A14SMS and A15SMS

The A14SMS and A15SMS engines are almost the same, but there are design differences: the piston stroke in the A14SMS is 73.4 mm; in A15SMS - 81.5 mm. This resulted in an increase in cylinder volume from 1.4 to 1.5 liters. The diameter of the cylinders has not changed - 76.5 mm.

Among these internal combustion engines, the A15SMS model turned out to be the most popular due to its improved performance characteristics. It is a development of the G15MF internal combustion engine, previously installed on the Daewoo Nexia. The motor received some features: a plastic valve cover, an electronic ignition module, control system sensors. It uses exhaust gas catalytic converters and oxygen concentration sensors, which has significantly reduced the amount of harmful substances in the exhaust. Plus, a knock sensor and camshaft position were installed on the motor.

Obviously, this motor was sharpened for low fuel consumption, so you should not expect exceptional performance from it. Timing drive - belt, the belt itself and the tension roller require replacement every 60 thousand kilometers. Otherwise, the belt may break, followed by bending of the valves. This will lead to a major overhaul. The system uses hydraulic lifters, so valve clearance adjustment is not required.

Like the previous engine, the A15SMS ICE, with timely maintenance, runs 250 thousand kilometers. On the forums, the owners write about a run of 300 thousand without a major overhaul, but this is rather an exception.

As for maintenance, it is necessary to change the oil on the A15SMS after 10 thousand km., Better - after 5000 km due to the low quality of the lubricant on the market and the spread of fakes. The manufacturer recommends using oil with a viscosity of 5W30 or 5W40. After 20 thousand kilometers, it is necessary to purge the crankcase and other ventilation holes, replace the candles; after 30 thousand, it is advisable to check the condition of the hydraulic lifters, after 40 thousand - replace the refrigerant fuel filter.

A15DMS is a modification of the A15SMS motor. It uses 2 camshafts and 16 valves - 4 for each cylinder. The power plant is capable of developing 107 hp, according to other information - 100 hp. This modification has no tangible technical or design advantages. She absorbed the disadvantages and advantages of the A15SMS motor: reliability, simplicity. There are no complex components in this motor, repairs are easy. In addition, the unit is lightweight - there were cases when it was pulled out from under the hood by hand, without the use of special cranes.

As a result, detonation, speed jumps and other "symptoms" occur. The solution is to replace or clean the injectors.

Tuning

And although the A15SMS and A15DMS engines are small and, in principle, designed for moderate city driving, they are being modernized. A simple tuning is to put a sports intake manifold, the average price of which is 400-500 US dollars. As a result, the dynamics of the engine at low revs increases, and at high revs, traction increases, it becomes more pleasant to drive.

A16DMS or F16D3 engine

Motors with the designation A16DMS have been used on Daewoo Lanos since 1997. In 2002, the same ICE was used on Lacetti and Nubira III under the designation F16D3. Starting this year, this motor is designated as F16D3.

Unofficially, it is believed that the F16D3 motor is made on the basis of the same block as the Opel Z16XE motor (or vice versa). In these engines, the crankshafts are the same, plus, many parts are interchangeable. There is also an EGR valve, which returns part of the exhaust gases back to the cylinders for final afterburning and reducing the content of harmful substances in the exhaust. By the way, this node is the first problem of the power plant, since it becomes clogged from low-quality gasoline and stops working correctly, but this is already known from previous engines.

Other problems also occur: soot on the valves, oil leaks through the cover gasket, thermostat failure. Here the main reason is hanging valves. The problem arises from soot, which blocks the precise movement of the valve. As a result, the engine is unstable and even stalls, loses power.

If you take Lanos based on the F16D3 engine, then it is better to choose a model after 2008 of release. The system uses hydraulic lifters. This means that valve clearance adjustment is not required. It is possible that tripping occurs due to nozzles with a unique design - they often clog, which causes the speed to float. Possible clogging of the fuel pump screen or failure of high-voltage wires.

In general, the F16D3 unit turned out to be successful, and the above problems are typical for engines with mileage above 100 thousand km. Given its low price and simplicity of design, the engine life of 250 thousand kilometers is impressive. The automotive forums are full of messages from owners claiming that with a major overhaul, the F16D3 “runs” over 300 thousand kilometers. In addition, Lanos with this unit are specially bought for use in a taxi due to its low consumption, ease of maintenance and repair.

Tuning

There is no particular point in increasing the power of a small-capacity engine - it was created for moderate driving, so attempts to increase power and thereby significantly increase the load on the main components are fraught with a decrease in resource. However, on the F16D3 they put sports camshafts, split gears, a 4-21 spider exhaust. Then, firmware is installed under this modification, which allows you to remove 125 hp.

Also, the 1.6-liter engine can be bored out to a 1.8-liter. To do this, the cylinders are expanded by 1.5 mm, a crankshaft from F18D3, new connecting rods and pistons are installed. As a result, the F16D3 transforms into the F18D3 and rides noticeably better, producing about 145 hp. However, it is expensive, so you first need to calculate what is more profitable: to squander F16D3 or take F18D3 for swap.

The best technological engine on this car is A16DMS, aka F16D3. When choosing, be sure to specify whether the cylinder head was moved.
