The HDi or High-pressure Direct Injection engine family was first introduced in 1998. This line of motors differed from their predecessors by the presence of the Common Rail system. There are four conventional diesel generations for the EURO 3, 4, 5 and 6 econo- mies, respectively.

HDi engines
1.4 HDi

The smallest diesel engines of the series appeared in 2001, they are classified as the second generation of HDi. Aluminum, in-line, four-cylinder engines were produced in two versions: 8-valve with a conventional turbocharger and without an intercooler, with a capacity of 68 hp. and 160 Nm, as well as a 16-valve with an intercooler and a variable geometry turbine of 90 hp. and 200 Nm.

HDi engines
1.5 HDi

The company's newest 1.5-liter diesel engine was introduced in 2017. This all-aluminum 16-valve 2000 bar piezo injector powertrain meets EURO 6 environmental requirements thanks to the use of the Blue HDi system. So far, there are two options on the market: basic from 75 to 120 hp. and RC for 130 hp 300 Nm. The power of the motor depends on the turbine, on the advanced version it is with variable geometry.

HDi engines
1.6 HDi

One of the most numerous engine lines among the HDi family appeared in 2003, so it immediately belonged to the second generation of diesel engines. The aluminum cylinder block at first had only a 16-valve head, a pair of camshafts of which were connected by a chain. The units are equipped with a Bosch fuel system with 1750 bar electromagnetic injectors, the older modification differs from the rest in the presence of a variable geometry turbine.

The third generation of diesel engines was introduced in 2009 and already received an 8-valve cylinder head. Thanks to the use of a new generation particulate filter here, it was possible to fit into EURO 5. All three engines are very different from each other and, above all, fuel equipment, or Bosch with electromagnetic injectors, or Continental with 2000 bar piezo injectors, as well as a turbine, which is either with a fixed geometry , or with variable geometry.

The fourth generation of engines, also with an 8-valve cylinder head, was first introduced in 2014. Even more sophisticated fuel equipment and the Blue HDi exhaust gas cleaning system allowed diesel power units to meet very stringent EURO 6 economy standards. As before, three engine modifications are produced, different in power and torque.

Recently, the concern's management announced the replacement of 1.4 and 1.6 liter internal combustion engines with a new 1.5-liter one.

HDi engines
2.0 HDi

The very first diesel engines of the HDi line were just two-liter engines. Everything was classic here, a cast-iron cylinder block with an 8 or 16-valve cylinder head, Common Rail fuel equipment from Siemens or Bosch with electromagnetic injectors, as well as an optional particulate filter. The initial series of internal combustion engines consisted of four units.

HDi engines
2.2 HDi

The most voluminous of all four-cylinder diesel engines of the line have been produced since 2000, and in the first generation, in addition to two 16-valve engines, there was an 8-valve unit designed specifically for commercial vehicles. By the way, such an eight-valve had a cast-iron cylinder block with a volume of 2198 cm³, and not 2179 cm³ like everyone else in this series.

HDi engines
2.7 HDi

The flagship 6-liter V2.7 diesel engine was developed jointly with the Ford concern in 2004 specifically for the top versions of its many car models. The block here is cast iron, the head is aluminum with 4 valves per cylinder and hydraulic lifters. The Siemens Common Rail system with piezo injectors and two variable geometry turbines allowed this power unit on a French concern to develop more than 200 hp. Land Rover SUVs were equipped with a modification with one turbine for 190 horses.

HDi engines
3.0 HDi

This 3.0-liter V6 diesel with four valves per cylinder, a cast-iron block and an aluminum head was created in 2009 immediately under the environmental requirements of EURO 5, so it used a Bosch common rail system with piezo injectors and a pressure of 2000 bar. Thanks to two turbines, the engine power on Peugeot-Citroen models reached 240 hp, and on Jaguar and Land Rover cars it was possible to pump it up to 300 horses.
