The Mazda Z series of engines is a four-cylinder water-cooled units, ranging in volume from 1,3 to 1,6 liters. These engines are an evolution of the B series units with a cast iron block. Mazda Z engines have 16 valves each, which are controlled from above the unit using two camshafts, which in turn are driven by a special chain.
The ZL motor block is made of cast iron, which makes it similar to the earlier Mazda B series of engines. The design of the block provides for the division into upper and lower parts, which gives this part additional strength. In addition, the engine is equipped with a special long exhaust manifold to increase torque. There is also a permanent adjustable valve type S-VT, as well as an optional stainless steel manifold.
The volume of a standard Mazda ZL engine is one and a half liters. Maximum engine power - 110 horsepower, 1498 cm3, standard - 88 hp Modification of the ZL-DE engine with a size of 78x78 mm has a volume of 1,5 liters and a power of 130 horsepower, 1498 cm3. Another modification - ZL-VE with a size of 78x78,4 mm is more productive than other engines, since it is equipped with a change in valve timing on the intake valve.
What makes S-VT technology different
This feature, built into the Mazda ZL series engines, helps to achieve the following goals:
- when driving with a heavy load at moderate speeds, the air intake flow is suppressed, which allows the intake valve to close, thereby improving the efficiency of air circulation in the combustion chamber. Thus, the torque is improved;
- when driving with a heavy load at high speeds, the possibility of a late closing of the air valve allows you to effectively use the inertia of the intake air, thereby increasing both loading and maximum output;
- when driving with a moderate load, the simultaneous opening of the intake and exhaust valves is improved in effect due to the acceleration of the opening of the air intake valve. Thus, the circulation of exhaust gases is increased, therefore fuel consumption is reduced, as well as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted;
- The exhaust gas regulation system draws inert gases back into the cylinder, which helps lower combustion temperatures and also reduces emissions.
S-VT is today a time-honored, simple system that does not require complex mechanisms of action. It is reliable and the motors that are equipped with it are generally of low cost.
