Mazda B-series engines are small units. Four cylinders are arranged in a row. The volume varies in the range from 1,1 to 1,8 liters. Initially put on inexpensive front-wheel drive cars.

The B5 series are 8-valve SOHC, 16-valve SOHC, 16-valve DOHC variants. The 16-valve (DOHC) engine was also produced in a diesel version.
The B6 series was a revision of the B3. 1,6 L injection engines were supplied to Europe, Australia and England. V6T - turbocharged version with intercooling and fuel injection. Installed on all-wheel drive transmissions. The B6D series differed from the B6 in higher compression and the absence of a turbine. A feature of the B6ZE (PC) series is a lightweight flywheel and crankshaft. The oil pan is made of aluminum and has cooling fins.
The B8 version of the engine used a new block with extended cylinder spacing. The BP version has a double overhead camshaft and 4 valves per cylinder. The VRT version uses an intercooler and turbocharging. The BPD version is the most turbocharged, with a water-cooled turbocharger. BP-4W is an improved version of BP. It features a modified intake duct system. The BP-i Z3 version boasts variable valve timing at the intake.

The engine number for series B engines is usually located in the lower right corner, below the valve cover. A special platform is located between the block and the injector.
The question of maintainability and reliability
Of the first cars on which B-series engines were installed, it is reasonable to single out the 121 Mazda 1991. A small car with a B1 engine can be repaired without any problems. Some troubles are delivered, perhaps, by shock absorbers. Off-road and time do not spare the suspension, which does not hold shock very well. Additionally, the grip is weak.
The cost of spare parts often exceeds the price of German counterparts. Of the advantages, it is worth highlighting high-torque power - a small-sized vehicle confidently takes on board 850 kg. In addition, fuel consumption is very small, which, of course, pleases.

Oil
Motorists often choose Castrol and Shell Helix Ultra brand oils, less often the choice stops at Addinol and Lukoil. B-series engines are not currently in production, so they have a lot of mileage. In view of this, it is recommended to fill in low viscosity oil, for example 5w40 or 0w40. The latter is ideal for use during the winter months.
Tuning

Reviews of the B-series engines are mostly a surprise. Even the 1991 Mazda Familia is capable of impressing with its agility. The automatic transmission, of course, works a little confidently, but, nevertheless, functions stably.
