Nissan NA20P and NA20S engines

Throughout its long history, Nissan has designed and launched a huge number of automotive products from its assembly lines. The concern's machines and their components have received the greatest recognition all over the world. Today we will talk about the latter. To be more precise, we will talk about the 2-liter units of the NA series represented by the NA20P and NA20S. A description of all the differences between these motors, their technical characteristics and operating features can be found below.

The concept and history of the creation of motors

At the turn of the 80s of the last century, Nissan engineers faced a serious and responsible task. Its essence was to replace the morally and technically obsolete internal combustion engines of the Z series with something more innovative and of no less quality.

The solution to this problem fell on the second half of the 80s, when in 1989 the motors of the NA line considered today went into serial production. Next, let's talk about the 2-liter representatives of the series. A 1,6-liter engine will be considered another time.

So, the NA20s of the engine are two-liter power plants manufactured by Nissan. You can meet them in two different variations:

  • NA20S - gasoline carburetor engine.
  • NA20P is a gas unit powered by a special injection system.

Apart from the type of recharge, the variations of the NA20s do not differ from each other. All engines of the series are made on the basis of an aluminum block and its head, as well as using a single camshaft. Because of this design, there are only 4 valves for each of the 2 cylinders of the engine. Cooling for all representatives of the series is liquid.

The NA20S engine was produced from 1989 to 1999. This unit was installed on sedans of the Nissan concern. It was most widely used on the Cedric and Crew models.

NA20P has been produced since the same year and still is. The concept of this engine was so successful that it is still equipped with budget large-sized Japanese models. Most often, the gas NA20 can be found on the Nissan Truck, Atlas and Caravan.

Service and Repair

Motors "NA" is not only successful for Nissan in terms of income from their sales, but also very high quality. The two-liter engines of the line are no exception, therefore they have only positive feedback from all their exploiters.

Neither NA20S nor NA20P has typical faults. With systematic and proper maintenance, the units in question rarely break down and more than roll back their resource of 300 - 000 kilometers.

If the breakdown of the NA20th could not be avoided, you can apply for its repair at absolutely any service station. Repair of these engines, like any other from Nissan, is carried out by many auto repair shops, and problems with it occur infrequently.

The design and general concept of the NA20S and NA20P is moderately simple, so "bringing them to life" is not difficult. With proper skill and some experience, you can even do self-repair.

As for the modernization of the NA20s, it is quite feasible. However, it is not worth tuning these engines for at least two reasons:

  • First, it is inexpedient in terms of money. It will be possible to squeeze out of them no more than 120-130 horsepower, but the expenses will be significant.
  • Secondly, the resource will drop dramatically - up to 50 percent of the available one, which also makes modernization a meaningless event.

Many motorists understand the pointlessness of improving the NA20S and NA20P, so the topic of tuning them is unpopular among them. Much more often, the owners of these motors are interested in the possibility of a replacement.

As practice shows, the best option for the implementation of the latter would be to purchase a diesel engine from Nissan with the name "TD27" or its turbo version "TD27t". For all models of the manufacturer, they fit perfectly, of course - in terms of replacing the NA20s.
