The popular Peugeot 108 hatchback, introduced in 2014, is built on a platform developed by PSA and Toyota. The technical characteristics of this city car model imply the presence of two "ultra-efficient gasoline three-cylinder internal combustion engines": a liter 68-horsepower, and a 1.2-liter 82-horsepower.

1KR-FE

The Toyota 1KR-FE liter ICE has been assembled since 2004. The unit is designed for a wide range of compact city cars. Over time, in order to meet stringent environmental standards, the aluminum three-cylinder aspirated 1KR-FE had an increased compression ratio and reduced friction, a combined fuel injection system, EGR and a new balance shaft. The variable valve timing system VVT-i is available only on the intake shaft. The power of this representative of the Toyota development of the 1KR series has increased, but there is less traction.

The 1.2-liter EB2DT, aka HNZ, is part of the Pure Tech engine family. In addition to the Peugeot 108, it is installed on passenger models such as the 208th or 308th, as well as on Partner and Rifter heels. The first EB units appeared in 2012.

It is thanks to the bore of 75 mm and the stroke of 90,5 mm that the EB2DT has a capacity of 1199 cm3. This engine is extremely simple. It uses multiport fuel injection, but it has a high compression ratio.

The 1.2 VTi engine is equipped with balance shafts, but only in the Euro 5 version. Due to the presence of balancers, the EB2DT has characteristic differences between the flywheel and the lower crankshaft pulley.

The timing chain is usually stretched already for a run of a hundred thousand km. Banal clogging of oil channels often leads to cranking of the liners. The pump cannot boast of a large resource, there are also issues with starting the engine in cold weather.

According to the EB2DT power plant, we can say that this engine is quite rare in the Russian Federation. Most often, owners of cars with this unit complain in foreign forums about the problem of accelerated carbon formation. It is usually possible to solve problems with idle speeds after flashing the control unit. A rattling noise in the engine most likely hints at the need to adjust the valves.
