In the late 90s of the last century, Toyota's marketing department conducted serious research to find out the demand for a car that can be called an urban version of an SUV. This is a car whose body geometry is similar to an all-terrain vehicle, but has a very low ground clearance. Since 1997, the Corolla model has had a corresponding line - the family compact MPV Spacio ("spatial").

History of creation and production

This car can be called unique. Its design was not only carried out by professional auto artists and engineers. The task was as simple as two and two: to design a vehicle that should have maximum space with a minimum of space. Enterprising Japanese came up with an interesting move. They put together and embodied in the sketches the dreams of the kids about what the look of a real family car should be.

The task was solved simply - the shortest dimensions of the hood and the high seating position. The authors of the concept, very reminiscent of the Soviet eye and the French Peugeot, are:

  • the design division of Toyota Motor Corporation;
  • Kanto Auto Works Ltd.

The first generation of cars entered the market in a five-seater version. For the configuration, two engines with a moderate displacement were chosen - 4A-FE (1,6 liters) and 7A-FE (1,6 liters). The first motor was intended for front-wheel drive versions (with an AE111 body), the second for all-wheel drive versions (with an AE112 body). Of course, such a broad economy could not but affect the technical characteristics of the machine. The disadvantages of Spasio 1st generation are high engine noise and high fuel consumption.

Strictly Japanese, something was missing in the design of this toy. It took four years to figure out exactly what. After restyling in 2001, the car was surprised by the fact that, despite its not very large dimensions, it already had three rows of seats. The middle two seats were small, and were intended for transporting children. The outlines of the body with the E12 body began to look more like a hatchback. Now it has become difficult to determine the niche of this car. Therefore, he remained a "family city car."

There was also a "non-Japanese" left-hand drive version of the car. It was sold in the US under the brand name Versa. List of technical innovations of the car after restyling:

  • installation of new engines with variable valve timing systems VVTi;
  • instead of an electronic display, electromechanical indicators with scales appeared on the front panel.

The last right-hand drive car left the Japanese assembly line in 2005. In the US, sales of the left-hand drive Verso went on for another four years.

Most of the feedback on the use of Corolla Spasio can be described as calm and positive. There is frankly nothing to admire in this car, and meticulous search engines will definitely dig up a dozen minor and medium inconveniences and shortcomings. But the general tone of the statements speaks of undoubted advantages, which include:

  • low price of the machine as a whole, parts and assemblies separately;
  • maintainability of the engine and chassis;
  • excellent level of ergonomics and comfort in the cabin;
  • great view from anywhere.

As a result, many motorists are very dissatisfied with the fact that the production of the car was discontinued due to the reorientation to other Corolla modifications.

Most Spacio owners admit that they would love to buy a new car to replace an outdated one. But it must be the same model.

The developers endowed it with a remarkable quality for operation in urban areas: it developed maximum torque almost immediately after acceleration, up to a set of maximum speeds. Drivers simply did not need to depress the accelerator pedal to the floor in low gears for a comfortable ride. The result is significant fuel savings.

The engine lineup for the Corolla Spacio is one of the shortest in Toyota's history. It so happens that the ideal choice of motor for this machine is the most popular option in most trim levels, 7A-FE. The design of the engine is very simple. The in-line four-cylinder unit has 4 valves for each cylinder. The two camshafts are overhead. Fuel system:

  • injector;
  • electronic control;
  • tumbler ignition.

The cylinder head is made according to a scheme similar to that used in the 4A series engines. The cylinder head gasket has a unique two-layer design: it is cast from a lightweight and durable aluminum alloy. The upper part of the double-case crankcase is attached to the cylinder block and gearbox housing. The steel bottom of the crankcase can be dismantled without removing the engine.

The design team has significantly improved the design of the units of the connecting rod and piston group.

In comparison with the 4A engine, other design improvements were made. An improved camshaft installation scheme made it possible to increase the opening width of the intake valves - from 6,6 to 7,6 mm. A WU-TWC converter was attached to the intake manifold. When tuning, the use of a smaller cylinder head allows you to bring the characteristics of the motor to the level of a more powerful 7A-GE (by about 20 hp). In this case, it is necessary to install a more efficient oil pump.

It is allowed to install a turbine as a supercharger. But this inevitably reduces the running life of the engine. In addition, there are no specially designed crankshafts and liners for boost mode. The standard pre-repair resource of the 7A-FE engine is 300 thousand km. Most of all, it is necessary to monitor the operation of various electronic devices of the power plant. Other malfunctions - wear of the bearings of the ignition system (distributors). A shift in the spark supply to the ignition can lead to loss of power and engine breakdowns.

And one more nuance. In this engine, the high-voltage connections of the electrical system wires should be kept clean at all times. Dirt causes constant breakdowns and tripling of the engine during operation.

The engine is good because when the timing belt fails, there are no collisions and bends of the valves and pistons. Most users noted the extremely high endurance of the motor. Among the problems include the mode of operation on a lean fuel sweep. In this case, the electronic control of the fuel system may "fail". This is expressed in the system's refusal to turn off lean at the moment the accelerator is pressed. While driving, this is expressed in the twitching of the car.
