Toyota Harrier drivers

Three years before the end of the 300th century, Toyota Motor Corporation introduced a new car to motorists. Known throughout the "right-hand drive world" as the Lexus RXXNUMX, in Japan it was labeled Harrier. This is a mid-size crossover class SUV (sport utilitary vehicle) - a light North American passenger truck for daily use. Thanks to the highest category of sound insulation, it is on a par with business class sedans.

History of creation and production

Not being an SUV in fact, Harrier, however, has an independent suspension and shockproof arc. In the modification with three-liter engines, in addition, the Active Engine Control Motion system is installed.

  • 1 generation (1997-2003).

The first versions of the crossover were distinguished by a variety of trim levels. The cars were produced front- or all-wheel drive, with a four-speed automatic transmission. The base 2,2-liter engine lasted three years, giving way in 2000 to the more powerful 2,4-liter. The entire first generation lasted another engine, a three-liter V6. The body after restyling remained unchanged. The design of the headlights and grille has changed somewhat.

  • 2 generation (2004-2013).

For nine years, the car has undergone various changes several times. The main improvements concerned the power plant. V6 with a volume of 3,0 liters. replaced with an even more powerful 3,5-liter engine. He was able to develop a power of 280 hp. Following the global fashion, in 2005 Toyota introduced a hybrid to the market, the power plant of which included a 3,3-liter gasoline engine, an electric motor and a CVT.

  • 3rd generation (since 2013).

Toyota bosses did not make the new Harrier in the export version. It is only available for purchase in Japan. The bulk of these cars settles on the islands, in the Far East of the Russian Federation and in the countries of Southeast Asia. The basic version is equipped with a motor that develops 151 hp. (2,0 l.), And stepless variator. The hybrid was “cut down” from 3,3 to 2,5 liters, reducing the power to 197 hp. The car is available to customers only in the version with all-wheel drive and an automatic locking center differential.

From the very beginning of production, Harrier reminds the automotive world of a powerful and beautiful thoroughbred dog. All the details in it are adjusted well and neatly. On the road, the car demonstrates excellent handling and dynamics in acceleration / braking mode. High ground clearance and a huge wheel size allows you to use it on Russian roads as an off-road vehicle.

Engines for Toyota Harrier

A distinctive feature of the premium versions of various Toyota models is the extremely accurate selection of engines. The list is characterized by a very small number of powerful, reliable units. Most of them are focused on six-cylinder engines with a large displacement. Over the 20 years of Harrier production, only eight serial engines were prepared for them: all gasoline, without turbochargers. Like many other crossovers, there are no diesels in the Harrier engine lineup.

As always, Toyota engines demonstrate a high degree of interchangeability: the list of models on which the Harrier line of internal combustion engines was installed includes 34 units. Most of all, 2AZ-FE was used - 15 times. But the 8AR-FTS motor, except for Harrier, was installed only on Crown.

The most popular motor for Harrier cars

More often than others, in more than 30 different configurations each, two motors were installed:

  • 1MZ-FE.

The first engine in the MZ series was designed as a 3 liter V6 with twin camshafts. It was a replacement for the outdated VZ series units. In 1996, the development team was awarded Ward's 10 Best Engines. In a 220 hp engine. a dual body throttle valve is used. The one-piece intake manifold is made of aluminium.

Two versions of the power unit are used. The first is with the VVTi valve timing regulator installed at the inlet. The second version uses electronic type chokes.

The transition to more economical and modern engines in the late 90s of the XX century was initiated by Toyota Corporation due to a rather impressive list of user complaints:

  • after a run of 200 thousand km. oil consumption increases sharply;
  • low reliability of knock sensors;
  • "swimming" of revolutions due to the rapid contamination of the phase regulator;
  • the formation of a significant layer of soot on the walls of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

However, even with such a long list of shortcomings, the engine was among the top ten in the world in its class. One of its main advantages are noiselessness and reliability of work.

  • 3ZR-FAE.

The second most used motor for the all-wheel drive model of the Harrier crossover. It was installed in 30 different configurations. One of the most advanced units for cars of the second decade of the new century was designed in 2008. A distinctive feature of the model is the presence of two different systems for changing the valve timing - Valtematic and DualVVTi. The purpose of using the new design is to increase the life of the intake manifold and optimize fuel consumption.

With the help of an electronic unit of a new design, the engineers planned to make the process of changing the valve lift of the engine smoother. Another way to improve the performance of the motor was to improve the design of the crankshaft and hydraulic compensator.

Despite the advanced design, the shortlist of engine faults is replete with the frequency of complaints:

  • traditional "zhor" oil. On the forums, drivers arranged a competition for who had this figure higher in terms of 1000 km. run;
  • frequent failures of the Valtematic electronic unit;
  • failure of the pump after fifty thousand kilometers wound on the speedometer;
  • rapid coking of the walls of the intake manifold, the appearance of "floating" revolutions.

But the reliability of work with the appropriate quality and frequency of preventive examinations is not satisfactory. 300 thousand km. it passes quite calmly.

The perfect motor choice for the Harrier

Choosing the best powertrain option for the Toyota Harrier SUV is a classic debate between power and recklessness on the one hand, and thrift on the other. A driver who intends to actively use this cool crossover as an SUV will very quickly “kill” any engine, even the hardiest one. Therefore, one should proceed from the principle of the "golden mean". Since, according to the general recognition of those who actively used the Harrier with different engines, 2,2-2,4 liters. it’s frankly not enough for him, you can stop the choice on the 3,3-liter 3MZ-FE engine.

The third representative of the MZ series motors

This is an improved version of the earlier representatives of the series - 1MZ-FE and 2MZ-FE. In addition to the VVTi electronic valve timing controller traditionally installed at the inlet, the ETCSi electronic throttle valve and a variable length manifold were used in the engine design.

The big advantage of this motor is its lower cost compared to other Toyota units of those years. The main part of the units and parts is cast from a light and durable aluminum alloy. Cast pistons are coated with an anti-friction polymer compound to increase service life.

The valves are designed in such a way that if the timing belt breaks, the likelihood of their collision with the pistons is minimal.

The service interval of the motor is 15 thousand km. During a preventive examination, it is necessary to carry out:

  • check for oil leakage;
  • computer diagnostics;
  • replacement of air filter elements (1 time in 20 thousand km);
  • nozzle cleaning.

Those who have used later versions of the engine have appreciated the major design refinement. To improve the operation of the detonation system, a flat sensor of a new design was installed. The resource of the gas distribution mechanism is much higher than that of older models, due to the use of steel in the manufacture of camshafts.

The list of its shortcomings is very short - high fuel and oil consumption. In general, the 3MZ-FE V-shaped six-cylinder engine is considered to be one of the most reliable in the new century. There is only one “but: Harrier with a 3MZ-FE engine, like any other crossover, is very picky about driving style. In urban traffic jams, fuel consumption can soar up to 22 liters / 100 km.
